Well if you ever find the '72 GSX that was Sandlewood with a tan vinyl top (only 1 made) don't put the info on eBay, I'll pay you a nice finders fee. Congratulations again on buying this car and for completing your set of GSXs. Not many guys have all three years.
I’ll do my best to track down the other X’s out there, after talking to paint and repair shops in the area about this car I was told about the other ones, people seemed to know the towns they are located in. May have to start a tv show, “curse of the lost X’s”.
The records show that 22 of the 44 cars were shipped to Canada so you are our best hope for finding more of them. I need that Sandlewood X.
Here is the redacted correspondence from vintage vehicle services. There is no hood tach, it’s in the dash.
So only 37 (5.1%) of the 728 Stage 1s built in 1972 went to Canada, I find that interesting. Thanks for sharing the details of your very rare car. We all look forward to seeing more photos of the car after you get it into your hands. After looking at your documents, these are the things that jump out to me about this cool GSX: - Front spoiler - a very nice option to have on a '72 GSX - Wheels - no optional wheels were ordered for this GSX. So this car came with 14x6 black steel wheels with dog dish hub caps. This is really cool and will look nice (see photo of '71 GSX below). - Tires - it came with the standard G78-14 white wall tires. So here is an example of what your car had on it when it was new. This is the unused spare tire in one of my '72 Skylarks that had the same wheels and tires that your car had. The correct wheels are "HF" code if you decide to find a set. They are fairly easy to find. Notice that Buick used a high gloss black, not satin. This gives an idea of how it would look with the standard 14x6 steel wheels and dog dish cars, just add the G78s with wide whitewalls
It seems like all of the 72 GSXs I have seen have very different stripes from previous years. The side/body stripes just always look different to me.
They are supposed to be the same as the previous years. Have any of those '72 GSXs had the original paint?
I believe it would also have come with the “Batwing” standard/base steering wheel. I see no option codes for a steering wheel. Duane
Thanks for sharing the information, it has rally wheels now so I will see if he has the steel 14 dog dishes in his garage somewhere. Gordon
Gordon, Just so you know the 14” steel wheels with the dog dishes did not come with trim rings. (Only the 15” rims had trim rings.) So your wheels would look just like the ones pictured above, on the 71 GSX, but the tires would be whitewalls. …..and we already talked about the front grill emblem. Duane
Wasn't there a pic. of it w/dog dish? Hopefully he still has them & the steering wheel. @oldschool85 has a steering wheel for sale w/one crack @ the hub.
Good eye Duane. I missed the standard Batwing steering wheel (I really like that wheel btw, 3 of my '72s were built that way). The '72 GSX productions figures ( http://buickgsx.com/1972 GSX Original Information.pdf Thanks to GSXNUT ) show that Gordon's new car is 1 of 4 built with the standard 14x6 black steel wheels and standard hubcaps (but the numbers on the chart don't add up to 44 so there could be more), 1 of 12 built with the batwing steering wheel, and 1 of 8 built with a front spoiler and no hood tach. Gordon, some '72s had the standard wheels painted the same color as the body, Cortez was not one of them. The wheels would be black according to the assembly manual:
Buick did not want to paint the “light colored” wheels body color, as they weee afraid of having the wheels look “dirty” from brake dust. Duane
