I need to know what is the same or will fit on both 68 & 69 Skylark's and GS.I mean will the doors, front fenders, decklids, hoods, dash pads, bumpers, etc interchange?I'm not up to speed on these cars. Thanks,Jeff
68' doors have wing windows,69's dont, fenders are the same with the exception of the lower trim, the only difference in decklids is the chrome, either hood will work the only difference is the ram air, dash pads are the same, front bumpers are the same back bumper on 69's has a backup light in the top center,68's dont. hope that helps.
Jeff, 68-69 hoods do not go up very high. They tend to whack ya' in the head when working on these cars. The solution is to install a pair of hood hinges and spings from a 70-72 Buick A-body. They will allow the hood to go up much higher, and will close the same. Try it.:TU: Jerry
i didnt know you could use 70-72 hinges on 68-69 cars. 68 are the only ones that dont open far. 69 hinges allow the hood to go up farther.
I tried to put 70-72 hinges on a 69, and they dont bolt up. The three holes dont line up. Did I overlook something? Pete
Huh, well they worked on a 68 GS400 I used to have.o No: I wish I had a 68-9 to try it again...:gt: Jerry
you guys had me wondering so i went out to the garage and checked. i have a set of 69's and a set of 70's so i put them up against each other and the bolt holes are different..i didnt think you could swap them because most that have 68's want the 69 hinges and if 70-72 would work then the 69's wouldnt be in demand.
Actually, there are 69 & newer models that do have the vent windows...this was discussed in another thread a few weeks back. I don't recall the specifics though... 68 & 69 steering columns are different also. 68 has no ignition, as it is in the dash. 69 is first year it is in the column. In the rear, the courtesy lenses are also different from 68-69. Both are rectangular, but not the same size. 69 decklid had the swing away lock, 68 does not.
Well that settles that. I better stick to the 70-72 stuff. Here's a frying pan, let me clank myself...ou:ou: :gt::gt: :spank::spank: Jerry
Hmmmm.... I traded a pair of Skylark door panel emblems for a set of hood hinges to swap onto my 68 last fall. Haven't done anything with them yet...I hope they are 69's, I don't remember for sure. I've emailed the guy to see if he remembers what car it was, from a salvage yard. I have A scar on my noggin from those stupid low 68 hood hinges... :spank:
ow! my head! david, i sympathize with your scar...my 68 is a magnet for my head any time i look under the hood...gotta get a set of 69 hinges... :blast: scott
Ya know.....The SportWagon is the only '68 I've owned, all others have been '69s. .....and I've Whacked my head on the corner of the Sporty hood a few times. NOW i know why !!!
68 specific items also include, grille, head lamp surrounds, grille surround bar, steering wheel, heater controls changed from dials to sliders, vinyl top moldings, door panels including door panel badges and seat trim. Fender trim orientation is different on 68 vs. 69 Skylarks, GS trim on fenders consist of GS badge, 350 or 400 badge and simulated brake duct on 68, 69 GS has no trim on fenders, it was moved to the rear quarters. 68 has round rear quarter marker lamps vs. square for the 69. 68 does not have the vent in the door opening. The vacuum can on the firewall of my 68 is a metal can on my car; the 69s I have seen have the round plastic looking ball type but have seen some 68s with this also. Head rest were standard in 69 and optional in 68 68 bucket seats had the seatback release on the side of the seat vs. in the middle of the back in 69.
The heater controls are different, '68 has rounded switches, '69 are more of lever type. '68 instrument bezel background and radio selector dial background are silver, '69 are black. The '68 Deluxe steering wheel is the same as the '67 except the '68 has a matte finish on the chrome insert where the '67 has a glossy finish (most people would not notice the difference). As mentioned above the '68 Rally steering wheel (simulated wood grain with a brushed aluminum finish horn cap) are unique to '68 (some say that they could be orded in '67). :beer
