Hello. My name is Mike Casey and I’d like to introduce myself. I had a ‘72 Skylark convertible in college and always told my wife I wanted another convertible A-Body. Well, a nice ‘68 GS400 followed me home from Mecum in Kissimmee this January. It’s in very good shape for its age but not all original. Over the next couple years I’ll change some things to get it just the way I want, so I’ll be asking the membership for their experience. So thanks very much, in advance, for your help. It’s been 35 years since I’ve owned an A-Body. My memory’s good, but might be rusty.
Welcome from a fellow ‘68 owner in Georgia. Post pics-we like them. By chance is yours Dark Gray with a three speed manual? Patrick
If you were in Kissmmee, that's the one. I'll get some pictures up when the weather gets better and it gets out of the garage. I live in Massachusetts.
Welcome! The Buick world is small. IIRC a board member once owned your car. @efogs400 maybe? I could be thinking of another car.
That would be interesting. I'd love to know more about it. Best I could get so far is that it is a real GS400, was titled in FL, and might have been an estate sale car bef0re I got it. I can also tell you it runs great and will cook the rear tire off the rim plus chirp 2nd pretty good. It also REALLY needs, at the least, a 4th gear.
Three speed works for me - I’m restoring one 68 GS400 convertible featuring 3-speed. Gear ratios are set up nice on these IMHO.
Thanks for your reply. After getting mine home and going through it thoroughly. It's not the original transmission (it says FOMOCO on case) and I can't ID the rear end. I turn 3,000 rpm at 60 mph. If that's ballpark for this car, OK. It's my first A-Body with a manual transmission. Regardless, It'll get wifey and I to local shows, the beach, and ice cream shops on Cape Cod.
They did use what they called the “Dearborn “ aka ford 3- speed for our GS 400’s -started on 65 and was the HD 3-speed til the 70's came out with the HD muncie. Welcome aboard! I'm a superfan of three speeds so don't mind me. They are rare and any Buick with a third pedal is enough to make me like it. Your car has one of my favorite color combos and I have admired it from afar. Enjoy . Ted
EfogsGS (?) used to own that car. It’s beautiful and that’s a rare color. (I used to have a ‘68 Wildcat that was originally color code V). Combine it with the three speed and it’s very rare. Patrick
Welcome to the forum. I always loved the step-child GS's, and the manual trans that much better! John
