Anyone know where I can get some gears for my 12 bolt between 3.08's and 3.42's? I don't think 3.42's will give me quite enought gear for top end, but I'm worried the 3.08's would be too tall.
GEAR VENDORS Might consider them. I know Dave in San Diego uses one on his blown BBB Stg 2 car. He gets his best time in 2nd gear OD, if I remember. Gee whiz, you guys got like a million horses and your worried about gearsou: Good talking to you at LV and glad the damage was minimal.
Re: GEAR VENDORS Thanks Skip! If I still had the TH400, I'd be there with the gear venders for sure. If the 700r4 ever goes cablamo real good, that may be the step I go as well. For now I need a gear that will get me to the end of the track  It was really nice talking the you too. Dispite thiking the motor was a total loss, I still had a blast!
When I was having my new 12 bolt built there were only those 2 choices.....3.08 or 3.42 from any vendor (this being 2 years ago). Thats new stuff, not including used or old NOS stuff. I really wanted 3.23's......but one or two ratio's is only like a slight tire diameter change anyway
Thanks Guys. Looks like I'll be going the 3.42 route. If I have to, I'll bump the limiter up to 6200 :eek2: and lock up the converter in 3rd. I'm just afraid the 308's would be too little gear and may cause the trany to scater from 1st to 2nd. Rich
Yeah, it's not the launch that I'm worried about, it's how stagared the ratio is from 1st to 2nd gear that would place a BIG load on the tranny. 308's would work pretty good out of the hole with it, but I'm affraid all the torque would kill the tran's with those gears when getting it into second.
3.73's......... and they were done at 6000rpm at around the 1100 to 1150ft mark. 3.42's should give me about 125 to 128mph with my 26 inch tall tires.......... that should be enough, but will be cutting it a bit closer than I would like.
3.07 Rich, I have a set of factory GM 3.07s in a Caprice rear. Not sure of condition but I will check if you are interested. Let me know. Brent
Rich, If you get the 3.42's and run a 28" tall tire( like the P275/60-15) your effective gear ratio will be in the neighborhood of 3.23's.
Hey Larry, I wish there was a sticky street tire that was availible for 17's that was 28 inches tall......... As it is now, I'm stuck with 26 inchers.
I hear you Rich, We definitely need sticky. If not for that, you could use a P305/45R17 B.F. Goodrich Comp T/A, at 27.8". Is the only difference the rubber compound?, or is there a constuction difference? Wonder if you could special order something? Don't mind me, just thinking out loud:laugh:
Rich, are you sure you want to "lock up the converter" in third gear under full throttle? I don't think the converter is going to take 500 ft lbs of torque in a lock up mode. Just wondering if it is ok-anyone. Mike D.
Usually source new 3.42 12 bolt gears from Chrisman Enterprises AKA California Gear. Great service, hard to beat.. http://www.chrismans.com/ Roger
