I am considering selling my 67 GS400 but I would like to hear from you guys what the value would be for a car like this before I make a decision. It is an unrestored car with no body work done to it at all. I have driven it quite a bit, but after a recent oil change it seems the motor is hurt. I have spent quite a bit of money on the car these past few months tracking down missing parts and getting the car roadworthy. I just don't have the time or the extra cash to start rebuilding an engine at this time of year. It has made me want to look into selling the car. If I can break even I will let it go and look at getting back into Buicks later on once things settle down for me. If the car isn't worth too much the way it sits I will keep it. I'll just have to lower my expectations in terms of how quickly it will be finished. Just as a disclaimer, this is not a for sale ad, please don't post asking to buy the car as that is against forum rules. If I decide to sell it I will make a new post in the right place. Thanks!
Usually rust is a critical factor in selling or buying one of these cars; it may help you to describe rust issues that you may be aware of to get meaningful feedback. Hope that helps get you some useful input.
Thanks! I wrote a little section describing the rust but I must have deleted it somehow. This car doesn't have much rust in my opinion. The trunk pan is the worst part of the car. That will most likely need complete replacement. It also needs the lower driver quarter panel replaced and the battery tray area of the core support. I have another RH inner fender and another core support to repair it with. There are probably some pinhole rust spots under the front and rear windows but I removed all the trim and couldn't find anything major. I believe there are also pinholes in the very bottom of the passenger side quarter. The floors, roof, decklid and fenders are solid. No rot at all.
Would I be far off base in asking $10,000 for this car? For any less I would just keep it as I have much more invested.
Is the frame solid? That's the deal breaker if it isn't.. I looked for your old posts as I think you had shown the bottom, so they are deleted I guess. Everything as far as original factory parts everything seams to be there, especially the Star Wars air cleaner which are brutally hard to find It's a nicely optioned 67 and the interior is really nice and i'm a sucker for white or off white. Doe's it have front discs.. I assume the engine spins as you have been driving it. If I had the room time and money for another project I would pay $10,000 but i'm not an expert.
The frame is solid, all the suspension is solid (although all rubber bushings will need replacement, it still rides great) It does not have front discs, it is power drum with the original aluminum drums. I replaced the wheel cylinders and brake hoses. This car stops so well you would assume it has disc brakes. I originally planned to swap it to disc brake but I am more than happy with it as is. The aircleaner was one of many parts I had to source for the car. Lots of original hard to find parts were removed and sold over the last 10 years. I have tracked down almost all of it except for the am/fm radio, battery tray and an antenna nut. I do like the interior, it is a nice change from all the black interior cars I have had before. It would really be stunning with new seat covers and door panels but the original stuff is still decent. The engine in the car now is a 72 455. I assumed it to be stock, but after running 14.1 @96mph with a terrible 60ft I now assume otherwise. It has a stock sounding idle. The engine sounds fine but after changing the oil and finding a bunch of metal there is certainly an issue. I am hoping it is just the cam or a lifter. It is mostly ferrous. I haven't run it since the oil change. I have the original engine, just torn down. It was seized when I got it. If there are no cracks it is definitely rebuildable. My plan was to rebuild the original engine, maybe even do a 445 stroker. Unfortunately no numbers stamped on the deck, which sounds common for 67 Fremont cars. Thanks for the questions! I am still torn about selling the car but I figure I would see what it is worth before moving further.
Ok now I remember some of your rebuilding and parts finding posts.. I'm not in your shoes but youv'e done so much finding these specific 67 parts it kills me from 300 miles away and on a keyboard that you most will likely let it go You even have the original block on the side, even if it has issue's. Although i'm not a numbers matching drive train maniac and easily can live with it as long as it period correct or a step up like the 455. When are you going to have time to look into the 455 issues it has in it now? I'm surprised no one else has posted their thoughts??
say it's not so Jacob. I've been following your post since you got the car because i got my 67 GS around the same time as you. i hope you change your mind keep it and con't to post your results. if you really need the money i understand. 10 k is a fair price and its only money which comes and go all the time. 67 GS cars are far a few. keep it. thanks for the inspiration. johnny
I may have the chance to buy this car back. I am seriously considering it if nothing has changed with the car since it was sold.
I'm interested to read if the current owner has changed anything about the car. Keep us posted. It's a neat car.
The owner says he hasn't changed anything and would just like to buy something a little bit more finished. He does want $1500 more than I sold it for, but to be fair I guess the market has changed a little since 2019. I think I'd be willing to pay his price if he can help me bring some of the parts back to my house. The car is about 2.5 hours away. I've been on the V8 board a lot this past week and I am excited to go to the GS Nationals on Friday. I kept thinking back to this GS400 wishing I still had it though. I currently have 3 project cars and a house with plenty of things to do, so I don't need another car, but I think I'll make the deal if the car really is untouched.
That would be cool Gary, I will try to have a name tag on I think so as well. I have had a few people tell me I should just offer what I sold it for but in all fairness the market has gone up quite a bit. I am just excited to have a chance to buy it back and I usually don't like haggling too much if the price is already fair. I just got caught up with your build thread on Butterface, amazing work! Can't wait to see it on the road.
I bought the car back today, but unfortunately I have to wait until next week before I can drive it home. It was really cool to see it exactly the way I sold it. Right down to the paint pen car # still on the driver quarter window from when I took the car to Musclepalooza/Buick day in 2019. I forgot to take some recent pictures but nothing has changed. I am excited to get it home and clean it up a bit. I have too many projects going on right now, so as long as the 455 in there holds up I am going to leave the car in one piece and spend this season cruising and enjoying local car shows.
