I need to put in a new rearend in my skylark and I was wondering if anybody knew what other cars that I might be able to steal one out of? Am I limited to the 66-67 A-body's, or will something else interchange. I would like to put a posi unit in it with about 3.73 gears... Thanks!!!

Should be a 64-67 10 bolt 8.2. Posi carriers and gears are available for that rear. Just change the internals. First verify that it is the original rear though.

I'm sure that its the original rear end. Its currently an open diff that the driver's side wheel bearing goes out every 5000 miles or so. It's the non clip type rear end and when the first two times the bearings went, it took an axle with it. I also want to say that the gearing was 2.9 somthing when I checked it in high school, but I'm not sure... I do know that when the tire breaks loose the speedo pops up to almost 90...

64-72 would work. There are minor differences in width and rear spring mounts.
64-67 had a flat spring mount which used a retainer plate and bolt to keep the spring in place. 67-up had a spring mount with a raised center that the spring sat on.
68-72 are generally one inch wider than the earlier years. Many different opinions on this, so measure width to be sure!
71-72 8.5 inch is a great rear. Read all about why on Georges site:

A posi and new gears for a 8.2 will run you $600++ so keep that in mind for your search!

The gear should be 2.93 and you can use a Chevy 12 bolt or 8.5 rear end. The newer rear will be 1 inch wider and shouldnt be an issue unless you are trying to fit a really large tire.

So the question begs to be asked, How big a tire could I fit? Could I use the newer 12 bolt and still fit a 60 series tire? I'm assuming that I would have to use a 4.5 in backspaced rim though.... I've got a friend that said he could weld the brackets for me...

I have a 1970 12 bolt Chevy 3.90 rear in my 67 gs400. I had Buick 15 inch wheels and 255/60/15 tire on the back.

If you can find a 71-72 8.5 it should be the same.

1967 will still take the Pontiac gears 68-70 use there own gears. Gears and posi for 8.5 rear will only be about 75-100 cheaper which in the large picture of cutting a drive shaft and u-joint conversion and labor to do all that stuff will balance out costs too.

Then there are strength issues. IF your going to drag race every darn weekend YES up grade to a larger rear. But street burn out showing off and cruising your gonna be A OK with the original 10 bolt 8.2 and you know if fits perfect.

Answering the question- ALL 10 and 12 bolt rear from 1964-1972 will direct fit your 1967 with minor mods such as u-joint swap or drive shaft shortening (8.5)

The bolt on perch rear will only need a cup plate and bolt to mount your original 67 spring to the pad.

Not trying to advertise But i do have a 3.73 1965 -1966 chevy rear Media blasted primed and painted chassis Black, NEW auburn, New 3.73 gears, New bearings and seals through out entire rear.... ready to roll. Just transfer your brakes and your done.
