Found out that one of the service contractors at my job is a "car guy"! I am trying to talk him into doing a few changes to his car, and bring it out to the PSMCDR!! It's a 1969 GTO Judge convertible. Triple black, orange stripe. RamAirIII. It is an original 4 speed car that a previous owner converted to a automatic after blowing apart the clutch/trans as evidenced by the repair work to the trans tunnel!!!
Anyway.....currently, his car sits on 15x8 Rallyes. What is the proper size rim for this car??? 14x7 Rallye??? Also, what size tire??? And.........the radial equivalent for the same????
He needs to swap over to the proper size rim/tire and to put on his correct intake and Q-Jet ( which he has ) and he will be ready to go!!!

He also has a 1965 Lemans convertible that had been nicely cloned into a GTO. 389 Tri-Power, automatic on the column. Dark Blue with black convertible top, and light blue bucket seat interior. Nice job of cloning. He is selling this 65 to pay back the money borrowed to pick up the 1969 Judge. Anyone interested??? He wants $21,000 for the 65. :Comp:

Largest tire/wheel combination for '69 was G70X14 and 14X6 Ralley II's. Not sure what radial size that is but if you go to coker's or one of the other tire mfg web sites it will have a cross.

That Tire size is correct. I have run my own Judge Convert myself. In the E-Town race we are a little more liberal as far as tire size. I was tired of hearing car show guys who wanted to run, complain about buying $ 1000 for new wheels and tires. So in the E-Town race July 30th you can run G-60-15's if you want and they CAN be radials. I ran on BF Goodrich radial T/A's this day at 38 degrees at E-Town last year and did just fine. Of course I baked them real good at the staging area.

    rdl,

Have to disagree. My memory and the GTOAA agree. I wrote one of the judges for them and 14 X 7 was not an option in '69. 14 X 7 did not show up until honeycomb in '71 and Ralley II in '72. No stamped steel 14 X 7 except on GP and FB in '69. A body never received 14 X 7 stamped steel during GTO years. Their information is from PMD service manuals.

Other GM A bodies did recieve 14 X 7 earlier. Pontiac seemed to be a bit behind the times until '71. Eric White with the GTOAA supplied the information.

I don't know about PMD, but Olds service manuals were rarely complete and covered evertything that happened during the model year. They were prepared way in advance of the new model introduction and had to be printed and distributed to the dealers before they started selling that model year. They had upgrades during the year in service bulletins on a lot of the stuff that required unique service procedures and tools.

Most of the the rare high performance stuff (W cars and Hurst Olds in our division) came out late in the model run and you won't find anything on them in the service manuals.

Olds used a 15 x 7 Rallye II wheel on the 69 Hurst Olds and 14 x 7's on all performance wheels beginning in 1970 (SS1, SSII, and stamped steel wheels). 15 inch wheels and tires were available as an option all through these years from the police options. I think they were 15 x 6, but not positive.

Assembly manuals are the best source for this type of info on Oldsmobiles. But they were updated throughout the model year, so unless you have a copy of one that was in effect when your car was built, may not be exactly correct. They updated pages daily......Cars built in the Assembly plants had many differences from the ones built in the home plants in Michigan.

Far be it from me to argue this kind of detail. They were available on the Firebird for '69, but if a Judge says not on a Judge, then that's the verdict! :Smarty:

Me either, however to play devil's advocate, :Brow: I went back to magazine articles. Car Life said 14 X 6 and no other optional wheels. Speed and Supercar (good old Joe Oldham  ) said 3 times they were 14 X 7. I have asked Eric to do some more research. Car Life even said in '70 they were 14 X 6 on the '70. :Do No:

When you look at the tires if they are 7" they really pinch the tire in at the wheel.

I will foreward to you the entire e-mail if you would like. BTW Eric is gtoric on PY. Feel free to contact him direct.

There are basically two kinds of folk in this hobby:

Number "Crunchers" :Smarty: and Tire "Shredders". :3gears:

Crunchers  are the parking lot guys who thumb their nose at the prospect of driving their documented car any further than the trailer.
Pure Stockers are Shredders, who crunch only enough to be race legal! :TU:

Crunchers huh. well there is a LOT of them here in Long Island, NY

I have given out 1000's of postcards to car show types promoting the Englishtown race July 30th. If 1 out of 1000 comes because of my efforts that would be a very HIGH percentage.

However listening the the car cruise / car show guys , you would think there wasn't a car in the world that could possibly be as fast as theirs. Then mention a race dedicated to them, and they all duck and run for cover as if a Nuke just went off.

You need a 225x70x14 tire. The BFG Radial T/A is your best bet. You could go up one size to 235 but it does not look like there is a suitable one avail.

    G70x14 dia. is 26.8"

    225x70x14 dia is 26.5"

Thanks for all the help guys!!! I have passed the link and the info to my buddy!

I agree with the 1 out of 1000 actually coming to an event such as PSMCDR or Engishtown. I have practiacally quit taking flyers with me to cruise nights/car shows. These guys are all afraid. You know the story: wrong gear ratio, wrong clutch, too much power, fresh rebuild, not enough power, blah blah blah........
They don't know what they're missing!
My buddy is real interested in wringing his out at the strip. That's the way it should be!
