Does that seem like a good price? Doesn't say if the wing is a repro or original. Also, according to an article by Duane Heckman on Buick Performance the '70 wing is 9.25 pounds but the '71 is 15 pounds. That's quite a difference, and since I have a '71 I'd like to know why. Hopefully Duane or George N. will see this and chime in.

I can't tell about the rear spoiler but the front is definately a reproduction, and it is not one of mine. It has no pre-drilled holes cut into it and is the 71-72 design, not a 70.

Thanks. Can you tell me what accounts for the large weight difference between the 70 and 71 rear spoilers?

Thats the way they were built. They had lots of problems with the 70 rear spoilers, so they changed everything for 71, including the pedestal sizes, thickness of the fiberglass parts, as well as the amount of material used to "glue the two halves together. Quite a few of the 70 GSXs had their rear spoilers replaced by the factory with the 71 style spoilers. When this happened the brackets were changed also or the trunklid would get dented.

Everyone thinks they are all the same, but actually they are different for each year.

Thanks for the info. I had always assumed they were basically the same until I saw those figures on the weights. Also, did rear spoilers come only on the GSX, or were they available as options on other GS's?

GSX only for 1970, optional on any GS in 1971-1972.

    Dennis,
Rear spoilers were available on 70-72 GSXs and 71-72 Gran Sports that were built at the Flint Michigan plant only. If your car came from Fremont or Framingham they were not available.....................

Plus if it was a standard GS it had to be a special car order (SCO) so if it doesn't have a low body number it never had one.

Everyone thinks any 71-72 GS could have a rear spoiler but that is definately not the case. (See post #10.)

PS. There were only (20) 1971 and I think (20) 1972 cars with rear spoilers that were not GSXs.

Yes, in 1971 there were only 20 regular GS hardtops (non GSX) built with factory rear spoiler.
In 1972, there were only 28 regular GS hardtops (non GSX) built with factory rear spoiler.

I currently own one of those 28 1972 Buick GS cars.

1972 Buick GS 455 hardtop ,sandalwood body with covert tan vinyl top, straight tan bench seat interior ,no guages, chrome standard mirror on drivers door and oddly factory WA6 Factory rear spoiler car.GM of Canada documentation.
    Odd, but unique car.

Was that last part really necessary?
I was being generic, and more specifically I was correct as far as I went with it.
If one came in to the dealer, filled out the forms to order a car with a spoiler, then yes. the car would have had to be built in Flint.
But that doesn't change the fact that on any GS in '71 or '72 the spoiler WAS optional, and could have been ordered with a rear spoiler.
    :TU: Geesh.

    Dean,
After I finished my post I saw yours and added the bit about post #10. It was a joke, come on now, I can't tease you guys.

The bit about it being available only on the Flint cars is 100% accurate. If a 71-72 GS was ordered with a rear spoiler then it was produced at the Flint plant and shipped to its purchasing dealership. No cars from Fremont or Framingham ever came with rear spoilers or any "GSX" specific options such as a front spoiler or a hood tach.

I get guys all the time arguing that their Fremont cars came with a rear spoiler from the factory, and the buyers that purchase these cars get really pissed when they contact me to ask about this and find out that its not correct. I also get the same response from 71-72 GS Flint owners when they find out their cars were not originally ordered with the spoilers.

Some of these guys get really mad because they now have to fill holes or repaint another trunk lid because they want it original.

Tell you what I'll just stop answering questions here for a while. You guys have any questions then call me on the phone.
