    Hi,

I recently picked up a nice bone stock 1970 Riviera that runs really strong. It starts easily both hot and cold and even after sitting a long time. My question is what size quadra jet carb is on this from the factory and is it jetted the same as a stage one setup? I suspicion that it is going lean after the initial punch from a stop. It will "squak" the rear tire and then the engine will briefly cut out and studder and then it will start pulling like mad again and squall the rear tire while rolling (now THAT is some torque). I think it has 3.07 gears in it so I was suprised at how well it will set you back in the seat. I just need to fix the cut out problem and it will run great!

    Thanks,
    James

The carb should be 750 cfm

Did you check the fuel filter in front of the carb? It should be a 7040247 as I recall. All 70 carbs were 750 Cfm. The Riv ahd it own unique number.

    Looks like nice score. :TU:

How much gas is in the tank when you have mashed on the pedal?

It's been my experience on more than one of these '70 Rivs that when the gas level is below 1/8th tank or so, and then floored from a stop, all the gas rushes away from the in tank pump and it will fall flat on it's face.
(Going up a steep hill will do it too.)
I imagine it is the same with a '69 Riv which also uses the in tank pump.
After it falls flat, all the gas rushes back forward and away you go again.

I'm sure the carb would benefit from a rebuild though.

Thanks! I think it is a great old car. It is clean and in pretty good shape for its age. The interior is in good shape with no cracks in the dashpad. It does need a little body work but no rust at all so a new paint job and vynl top will do wonders for it. It drives smooth and straight. I drove it home about 20miles after I bought it and after some brake work I have been driving it to work about 1 day a week.

The cutting out happens even with a full tank of fuel, so I will plan to change out the fuel filter on front of the carb and see if that will help.

Would this 1970 455 benefit for a larger carb, like the 800cfm that were on the later 455's?

Sure, it will like the extra 50 cfm.
I doubt you will feel any noticable difference though.

Doug Jones of NASCAR fame, known here as "motorman", who along with his partner raced maybe the most famous Buick drag car, recently posted they tried both the 800 and the 750 Q jets. Both carbs ran the same times or if there was a difference one could not detect it. So I suggest you just set up your current carb.
