I suspect it more a "quality is job none" thing. Interesting - Thx. That interior of course shouldn't have had woodgrain.
I believe the 1970 dash woodgrain has more to do with body style option & nothing to do with interior option.... check Brad's post at the top of this page.... http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/nice-70-gs-350.36967/page-2#post-275659 I believe center fold down armrest was only available with deluxe interior option... check Duane's post about half way down this page... http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?th...eadrest-covers-underside.357175/#post-3062316
Brad's post: "The standard interior Skylarks and GS's did not have the woodgrain on the dash...the Skylark Custom's and GS's with the optional interior got the woodgrain on the dash." I always believed this to be correct but there's certainly either more to it or there were a lot of assy. line mistakes (possible). I guess it would take a thorough review of build sheets vs. known orig. cars. I beleive I have the orig. dash bezel for my 128 (std. black) '70 GS and it didn't have woodgrain but I don't have a build sheet. '70 Convertible GS's (not sure on '71-72 if the upgraded vinyl came std on verts) were the only ones available w/the waffle material and no fold down armrest (15x series interiors) and were only avail. in black (158) or Sandalwood (154).
I agree with you. From Brad's post I quoted above it seems to me that interior option was not a factor in what A-bodies were 'supposed' to receive woodgrain dash inserts. I can understand a line worker saying 'this is what we have, this is what we'll use' or a previous owner deciding they didn't like it (bad condition or preference) & peeling it off.
