The propeller shaft in my GS fits too tightly into the manual transmission. I am questioning whether I have the correct one. Does anyone know the correct part number for the propeller shaft?
According to TSB 71-I-5A (Regarding driveshaft length changes from 1970 to 1971) The 1970 ALL Stick shift cars (350 and 455), and GS350 TH-350 cars should have a driveshaft length of 56.00 inches center-to-center on the universal joints;color code is 1 black & 1 purple stripe. 1970 GS 455-TH400 cars should be 55.10 inches; color code 1 brown & 1 blue 1971 350/350 & 3 speed stick cars should be 55.44 inches; color code 1 yellow & 1 black 1971 455/400 cars should be 54.241 inches; color code 1 yellow & 1 green 1971 455&350 4 speed cars should be 54.429 inches; color code 1 red 1971 350 TH 350 cars should be 55.144 inches; color code 1 purple ***TSB 70-I-91 Also some late 1970 FLINT built cars have the 8 1/2" rear for 1971 cars.***
Not sure a part number will help you. I don't think they're stamped. The only thing you need is a tape measure
No, I do NOT have a part number, but I have TWO updates; I edited the other post regarding colors, and... There is another TSB regarding 1970 rears and , therefore, the affected driveshafts by default. TSB 70-I-91 concerns approx 300 1970 Skylarks, Gran Sports, and Sportwagons built beginning May 10 at the FLINT PLANT ONLY will be built with 1971 rear axle assemblies. It lists the axle codes, ratios, and assembly part numbers (blah blah blah.) So, if you have a late build 1970 Buick built at Flint, you MAY have a factory 8 1/2" rear end! That would require it to have a corresponding driveshaft according to the 1971 specifications. (See my posting above, #3)
You can resolve this 8.2 versus 8.5 issue in a flash. Does the differential attach to the propeller shaft with u bolts or straps?
Is the 4 speed in there a small output or the larger turbo 400 style? Thats got me confused. Are we talking length or front yolk diameters/gunked up splines etc??? ws
The 70 and earlier Muncies take a turbo 350 style yoke and the 71 and up take the turbo 400 yoke. The ones with the 400 yokes are 3/4" longer
What about the OD's where the seal rides and enters he rear babbit support bushing? Krud in the splines can really make it ruff too! ws
I dont know if I mis-read the original post or if Steve's post threw me. For some reason I thought the thread was about driveshaft lengths. But yeah, your right Bill, in re-reading the thread, your right on the money with your post
Thats what got me too. Some times the OP uses one wrong term and can change the whole thought process. So back to that part, the yoke doesnt go into/onto the trans output shaft? AFAIK, theres only like 1 or 2 front yokes. Just inside the rear seal theres a babbit guide bushing to lessen the run-out wear on the seal. A little buger on that or even a dirty female spline (gummy old grease) can raise heck when youre trying to do that job on your back. Did any output shafts have a master spline?
Thanks for all of the info everyone. What prompted my inquiry was the way the drive shaft fit and the wear in the end.(see photos). The number on my drive shaft pictured is F2-1099 for the top photo and SD444 for the lower photo. The drive shaft measures 55” center to center of the u joints. I had the incorrect rear end in my car. I bought the correct one from Jollygood(thanks again). I am in the process of rebuilding it. The drive shaft fit too tightly against the transmission which cause a slight amount of wear. I am thinking that I will have to wait until I finish with the rear end and see how it all goes together. I see that the correct drive shaft should be 56” long which would be tighter yet. Hence the confusion on my part. My car is at the body shop now and they are going to strip it down to bear metal and remove the 25 year old eurathane enamel paint. It will be a panel by panel repaint. Fortunately the car spent most of its life in Arizona. There is no visible rust anywhere. There is a small dent in the right front fender and a light scratch in the left front door. I took some photos of the car after removing all the chrome except 2 emblems that the previous owner glued on....I am attaching some interior photos of my car. This is my first restoration and would appreciate any tips.
