Nearest thing to original can be had from The Parts Place,or Fusick Olds parts. They are both the same repro.Joe
I just purchased one from The Parts Place this week. It was $49.00, I also purchased the shifter boot ring from them for $29.00. Prices do not include shipping (was $10 for me). Shipping was extremely fast. The boot and ring look good to me, see the pictures below. I know some people may not be happy with everything from TPP, but everything I have purchased from them has been excellent. :TU: The last picture is a compare of the boot ring for '66-'67 Chevelle on left, and the '70-'72 boot ring on the right. I think some people were trying to use the Chevelle ring? The Chevelle ring does not fit the '70 - '72 Buick boot.
Yes, the ring for the '70 - '72 that is sold by The Parts Place, does fit the boot that they sell and should fit the original boot as well. The screw holes in the repro ring do not line up exactly with all the holes in the boot, but it does not really matter. The screws just go through the rubber anyway, and are not seen when the boot is installed.
Don, thanks for posting those photos. Looks to be considerably better quality than one I bought from Legendary (Made by Metro) a few years back. Sent it back because it was perferated and trimmed poorly at the parting line. The replacement they sent me had exactly the same issues as if it it was the one I sent back. The one you show gives me some confidence in replacing my original.
Don, is the new repo boot bigger than the original '70 boot? I posted pics of the repo next to a '66 boot, and the repo was much bigger.
Walt, I don't have an original one to compare to since I am converting my car back to manual from an automatic. I will say it looks exactly like the one that was in my other '70 GS with 4-speed. The rubber has the correct "feel" and looks very well made. Perhaps someone else has purchased one recently from TPP, and can share the comparison. I can measure the boot if it would help answer the question.
Don If you want to compare it to my original one for size give me a call. I mgiht have a couple of parts to use for your conversion also,
Scott, I sent you a PM. Maybe I can come by and we can compare the boots. Let me know when you will have a few minutes.
Update on the shifter boot comparison: Thanks to Scott Palmer (SP4SPD) for letting me come over to his house today to take some comparison pictures of his original 4-speed boot. :TU: Joe (gsjo) is correct, the repro boot (from TPP) is larger than the original. The part that would fit above the carpet has a larger diameter than the original. If you look at the pictures, the difference looks very obvious, but when it is installed the repro looks pretty good. I suppose you could attempt to trim some of the boot to match the original, but it probably wouldn't look as good? The picture comparing the bottom side of the boot shows exactly what we are talking about on the size difference. Also the repro shift boot ring is basically exactly the same as the original. I have a few pictures that show the rings stacked on top of each other. In another post I will show the original and repro boots installed (we just slid them down over the shifter) for comparison. It looks like the repro will work with the original ring or the repro ring since it fits exactly (screw holes are even in the same place as the original. The repro will be more "forgiving" for the carpet hole size since it will cover more on the top side of the carpet. Thanks again Scott, you can share your comments on what we saw today if you wish.
Here are the boots installed on Scott's 1970 original GS 4-speed. The first three are the original boot just slid down over the lever and against the carpet. Complete installation would obviously look better. The last 4 picture are of the repro (TPP) boot slid down over the shifter. Hope these pictures help.
I finally pulled the trigger and got my new boot from The Parts Place. Shipping was lightning quick via mail and the boot quality is spectacular; a very nice reproduction.
OK what about console cars lower and upper? I have an original upper but no lower boot. I have never seen a lower in person
Well I have not looked it up but yes probably that one For my 4 spd set up I need only this and a hump for the floor. Oh and send my shifter off to be done
I went through these shifters back in the day but I want the handle rechromed. I sent one to Mr Gasket for a Corvette years ago and they did it all including the rechrome. Now just the chrome job is more than that whole rtebuild was.
Where is the best place to get an upper boot for a console car? Mine has a couple small tears and I wonder if there are any ways to repair those. Paul
