What breaks first in these 71 Skylark rear ends?
I read somewhere that spyder gears let go first. How about the axles and ring/pinion, etc.

Been racing for 5 years changed the carrier to an eaton so i cant tell you about the spiders but the axles are still ok and they are the 28 spline.

I don't know, we haven't broke an 8.5" rear yet. What are you trying to do with yours and what do you have?

We run a rebuilt gm posi unit with stock axles in our 72 and have for 3 years pounding it hard at the drag strip. Running Moser spool and axles in our 70 car, and beating on it every chance we get. No problems at all with either one yet.

I have run 12.30 at best and had no problems, but read where one guy busted the spyders when he got down to 1.55 60ft.
Switch pitch converters rarely 60 ft below 1.70's
This would be possible only if I swap my switch pitch to a JW 9.5 converter and make a few tuning changes on my car. Just looking to the future.

Switch pitch converters are definatly capable of 60 ft below 1.70. I pulled off a 1.58 with mine. And it was so loose that I almost crossed the center line.

When we finish up the suspension I believe it will be capalble of 60 ft in the 1.40 or possibly 1.30.

That is with an 8.5" rearend. We have not put a girdle on it. But we plan to soon. :TU:

    Tyler,
Wow! You must be running quicker than 12's and stalling over 3000. Right?
Also how do you operate your high/low switching process?

Guy's, I'm feeling better about this 8.5" rear. Lookin' good with the comments so far.

    Gary,

I ran an 11.17. I have a PAE 1800 low stall, and 4000 high stall. I have a button on my shifter that I use to operate the stall.

But I am contemplating using a timer or something like that to operate it. The car gets pretty loose occasionally on the launch, and I will have to take my hand off of the shifter to get it strait again, and it switches to the low stall too quick off the line. That makes me lose a little bit of time. I will figure something better out before next season!
