This may sound like a stupid question but can a rear tranny seal just leak when the car is running (moving) and spray fluid on the exhaust but not show any signs of dripping when the car is at idle or off?

The leak is most likely the weep hole at the rear of the yoke. Check for fluid on or near the front ujoint. This will sling fluid onto the exhaust when moving.

make sure the rear bushing in the tailshaft isn't wasted. That would cause a leak

After seeing that I had fluid on my cross member and the garage floor for the first time, I had the rear bushing and seal replaced. This past weekend I took her out and low and behold I had more crap spraying on the cross member. I put her on jack stands for a look see and other than what sprayed all over the place I did not see any evidence of a leak. Thinking I must have lost a lot of fluid I checked the level and after triple checking I concluded that the fluid level is OVER and inch above the full mark. I never added any fluid and I never checked the level after getting the car back from the tranny shop as I assumed they would not have overfilled it. Only thing I added was 10oz of shift additive (gear lube) awhile back to address a sticky valve. I'm going to pull out some fluid before I do anything else. Weird thing is that she wasn't leaking anything for some time after the install and all of a sudden shes bleeding to death. I wonder what changed? </SPAN>

I took approximately 1 quart of trans fluid out today as she was about 1" over the fill mark warmed up and then cleaned the underside by my cross member. I then drove the car around town "hard" for awhile a various speeds to get the temp up. I came back home put her in park, didn't smell any fluid, see overspray or any dripping. While she was still running I checked the fluid level again when she was really hot and it seems right on the money. Could just 1 quart of fluid over the fill level have caused my leak(s)? I've had the car back for a bit now since the tranny was serviced and she was fine until a few days ago when the issues started. As I stated previously I had the rear bushing and seal replaced thinking that was my problem only to find it wasn't. I guess we'll see what happens overnight. Might there be a vent issue?

Just came to an agreement with my rebuilder that hopefully will result in the unit being replaced!
