Do we have any transmission experts here? I had to install my spare trans because of a problem with the GN trans. The spare is not a GN unit, it's out of an `89 Caprice and has been rebuilt with about 3,000 miles on it. It was too soft for my taste so I put a new Transgo kit in it. Everything works perfectly except for one thing, it won't upshift at WOT. I've already dropped the pan the looked at the governor. No problems there, and the TV cable is adjusted exactly the way it's supposed to be. Any suggestions? I probably screwed something up, I'd just like to know what it was.

Do you have a one or two wire solenoid in the trans?

One more advantage of the 2004R over the 7004R, only the 2004R shifts at WOT to overdrive gear.

This sounds like a governor issue to me since the governor determines the WOT shift. Once you let off the gas the TV cable lets it shift. Likely a missing spring or sticky governor.

I would buy and install a SS governor to get a nice high WOT shift:

    SS CZ/CQ code Gov.

    Two wire solenoid.

Nothing wrong with the governor. I pulled it yesterday to check it because that's what I thought it was, too. It wasn't. The check balls are both intact where they are supposed to be as is the spring and it moves freely like it's supposed to.

Something else worth mentioning. I have 4.10 rear gears so when I swapped the trans I removed the speedometer gear from the GN trans and put it in this one. The gear/governor housing is held onto the governor shaft with a snap ring so rather than remove it I just put the whole thing in. I have a feeling there's a connection between this and one of the springs I installed from the shift kit. The shift kit is specific about putting using or not using this or that item "if you have the GN trans". With that said, I installed the shift kit as I would for a non-GN trans, then, without making a mental connection to this, I put that GN governor in at the last minute. I'm going to read through those instructions again and see if I can find something. In the meantime, if anyone else knows what it might be, please let me know. Thanks.

Problem solved!!! I took the GN governor apart and weighed the primary and secondary weights. They came in at 34 grams on the primary and 16 grams on the secondary. It also had the light spring on the secondary weight. Then I pulled apart the Caprice governor. Those weights came in at 42 grams on the primary and 19 on the secondary, so I ground those off to 38 and 16 respectively, used the heavier secondary spring and bingo, it shifts right a 5,000rpm in drive and will shift whenever I want it to shifting it manually. I guess it's just my lucky day  I'm long overdue for one.

    Good work!!!

I was just about to post some info for you leading to what you found out!

It seems that the governor in the regular 2004R only allows a shift point of 3000 RPM at WOT... Now that you have essentially made it a "GN" governor you are getting your WOT shift points higher.
