Hey guys. I have a turbo 350 in the '71 Skylark, and I vaguely remember reading on here that the 200-r4 is a straight forward bolt in (tranny mount moves back, slip yoke from old tranny sort of thing). Aside from the Grand Nationals and Monte SSs, what other cars (G-body '84-'87?) can I look for to pull the tranny from? KFD
And it is a 200-4R transmission. Try over at the turbo buick boards. Always a good selection over at them.
In case you're still looking..... Non-Chevy B-bodies used the 200-4r from '84 till '90. Just find a Lesabre, Delta 88, Parisienne, or any wagon and check for OD on the column and an Olds 307 or Buick v6 under the hood. My '84 Lesabre has the 307/200-4r combo. Nice trans. Bet it was even better back when it wasn't all worn out o No:
Unless your planning a rebuild very soon the only really good ones are the BRF, BQ, CZ, or KC tagged ones. Valve bodies make all the difference. If it didn't come from a sporty car the shifts are going to be soft and sloppy.
I recently drove 100 miles(one way)to check out a 200-4R that a guy pulled from his 85 Monte Carlo SS.It turns out the transmission was an OG type out of an Oldsmobile 307.I was pretty disappointed, but bought it($75.00) anyways, just to not come back empty handed. You should print out the application chart that Dwayne posted and take it with you.Check out the metal tag on the rear tailshaft,so that you know for sure what tranny you are looking at.
Go for one of the best, MonsterTransmission.com. (I wish I would have). You can get a mild build or a heavy duty build. They can set you up with a full install kit. They have been featured in many magazines. I bought a used trans and had it rebuilt. I ended up spending more for a mild rebuild than I would have for this Monster heavy duty. Mine came out of a 1987 Olds 442, and it has the performance valve body and governor. It isn't quite as nice as having a Grand National trans, but it is still better than the base 200-R4 units. I would get the code letters for you, but it is currently buried under my workbench while I work on the 455 for my Riviera. Good luck with your search, Randy
