I have a plan to put a 200-r4 into my girlfrends 71 skylark 350 350. I already have a 200-r4 from 86 monte LS, but I think I will sell it and buy a newly build 200-r4 insted. I would hate to put in a trans that might brake after a short while. So I think I will sell it and put the money into a new one. So now I am trying to put together a shopping list so I can buy all the parts and get them to Norway before I start the swap. This is what I have on my list so fare: -200R street/strip trans from CK Perfomance -12" street/strip lockup converter #24RC/SS (D5) from CK Performance -B&M lockup controler 70244 -a trans oil cooler -rebuild kit for the rear end incl posi unit and 3.43 gears -trans crosmeber bushings -tv-cable -tv-cable bracket I need to figure out how to hook the tv-cable to my quadrajet and I need to figure out what the tv cable bracket need to look like. Is there anything els I need or need to change? What do you guyes think of my shopping list so fare? Any coments or inputs are highly appreciated Helge
You don't say which qjet you are using so I didn't know which to link to.. here is a list of kits this vendor offers. If you poke around in that site there are excellent tv cable how to instructions and explanations of how it works. http://tvmadeez.com/
I talked to Chris at CK performance yesterday. He told me he would help me figure out the tv setup He also told me that I don't need any kind of control box becaus the trans I am getting have alle I need build into it The carb I have is quadrajet 7041544.HD
With a stock Q-jet and stock intake you will have to raise the carburetor so the TV linkage will clear the heat crossover in the intake. You will need to fab/weld/adapt a TV cable bellcrank to the throttle blade of the Q-jet. Use one of the TV Made Easy ones so that you can take advantage of the adjustability. I have done this and it was very difficult to get it to work properly and not worth the effort, in my opinion. If you drive it and it is not set up properly, you will wipe out the trans. If all around drivability and ease of install are your primary goals, I would invest in a TA Intake and an Edelbrock performer series carb. Install and setup of the TV cable this way will take less than an hour and be straight forward, whereas the other route would take all day or more. You will also need to adapt a TV cable mounting bracket at the intake as the Buick 350 kick down went directly from gas pedal to trans instead of to the carb
There were a bunch of late 70s Quadrajets by buick that included the lower arm in correct OEM geometry needed for TV applications. You can swap one of those throttle arms onto your 7041544 qjet. Have a look at the throttle arm on this one, it is the style I am talking about: http://www.everyday-performance.com...s.htm#!/~/product/category=578011&id=33184193 as mentioned above you will need to run a spacer under the carb to let the lower throttle arm clear, and you will also need a spacer under the rear trans mount of .5-.75" to avoid drivetrain vibrations at hiway cruise speeds. for the cable bracket, I used this one from TCI that mounts to the two rear carb mounting bolts: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/tci-376700
I run Holly carbs but that is a smokin deal on the Q-jet. Just get a stock style TV cable. I am sure Chris at CK can get you set up perfectly. That carb will make it easy. With the right parts as recommended above TV cable adjustment takes 30 seconds and is foolproof.
I did set up the TV cable to my 350 kickdown tab on the fuel pedal. I got that advice from Jim weise and it seemed to work out really well for me. If that's something you would be interested in.
It's great to here from you guys installing a 200 4-R because I'm building a 455 to put in my Regal so all the help is greatly appreciated. I know we need detent adjustability or so called Throttle valve, I'm just waiting to know how much money to soak into this trans if and when I will take it to the strip!
I have the Bowtie Overdrives adapter on a Holley. I would not do it again. GM knew what they were doing and my transmission builder just used it to make it have stock geometry and we locked it down. Made sure the throttle was opening all the way and put a stop on the cable, then did the factory adjustment. Works perfect and I don't have to do anything to it. I think a lot of transmissions are destroyed by trying to "adjust" the cable. So if you go with one of the known builders, CK, Extreme Automatics, Vince Janis and do what they tell you it is a great transmission. I think I have one of two 200-4r's with a supercharged 455 in front of it. Would put my trans builder against anyone but he just builds them out of his garage on a cash basis. Can't argue with the results though.
I guess I need to do something whit the trotle arma myself. CK could onely provide me whit the TV braket that I need. I have 3 old quadrajeten laying around from something and two tbi unints from 80's monte carlos. The monte carlos came whit 200-r4. So if I don't have the arm I need on one of the quadrajet, can I use one from one of the tbi unints? Or maybe cut of the end and weld it back on? If it wasent for that I bought a rebuilt quadrajet last year, I would have bought a new one to save me the trouble. How tall does the carb spacer have to be? HD
IIRC I used a .5" phenolic spacer plus a thick carb base gasket. So 5/8" to 3/4" was enough for me to just clear the 1972 cast intake I used
Called CK Performance yester day and talked to Crises wife and put in my order for the 200R SS trans, converter and mounting kit :TU: Onley thing I need now are an external oil cooler and a carb spacer. I am realy looking forvard to this swap and to see how it will change the car when I also are changing the rear en gears to 3.42. Any sugestions on a oil cooler? HD
x2 on that.. Eventually I would like to send my carb to Ken for the correct throttle arm and a nice tune up. You will love your new transmission, of all that I have done to my car, the 2004r and torque converter are by far my favorite upgrades.
I can't wait to hear how it works! I'm still building a mild 455 to match to a 200-4R and yes it will go down the strip so that high dollar rear sump pan will be one of my purchases.
It will be a while until I get it in the car. It wont arive at my house befor in two month. And at that time I have already went back to worke offshore Trinidad & Tobago shooting BIG air guns.... So I hope to get it in befor cristmas. I am also rebuilding the rear end and putting in a new exhaust at the same time. So I hope I don't run into any to big suprises. HD
Is the arm in the picture the corect arm that I need for my quadrajet? I have two quadrajets laying on the shelf whit that type of arm. Is it the same arm for the th700 and the 200-r4?
you have to use the whole bottom plate off a quadrajet iirc. the ccc carbs in the 80s have the parts needed.
I got a really nice oil cooler out of a Ford Ranger. Will have to take pics on how well it fits under the hood. Also good choice on going with CK for your trans. There are only a few builders that I would trust. Most of them you can find on the TurboBuick forums. Some of the big name builders ArtcoughCarr...suck, so does ATI and Monster.
So where that tab is on that carb won't work for the 200-4R? Does it have to be one off of a ccc carb to have the right geometry?
