Coming home from a car show today my tranny started making a noise in drive the overdrive position and reverse when sitting still. Nothing in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd position. It sounds almost like a cross between a soft or light gear grind but not loud and a power steering pump low on fluid. The transmission works fine and the fluid isn't burnt.

Update the noise is there in all gear positions when sitting still. Goes away as soon as car starts to move. Quiet going down the road.

when sitting still not much is moving.

The front pump (rings are a common failure?)

the converter impeller is spinning with the flexplate while the turbine is sitting stationary. The stator roller clutch should be locking it against freewheeling for torque multiplication.

did you check the fluid for metal particles?

Thanks for the reply Ken. I just got back from the tranny shop. The stator was broke. The builder lied to me about what was in the tranny I found out today. It was a used part special. I'm getting tired of getting stiffed by so called Buick people.

Sorry to hear the bad news, but glad you got it figured out.

The converter stator? I'm feeling the 200-4r blues too...

But on a positive note my PTS -extreme trans is still hanging in there...knockin' on wood...

Yes the converter stator, the guy who did the build was less than truthful
I found out. I'm waiting to see what he wants to do about it. Glad to hear the PTS-extreme is working for ya.

Sorry for you, hope things smooth out again. Also had some bad after-sale experience, needed info, called a billion times, wrote emails, send fax. If anything, I got one or two quick "yeah, try to pull the cable..." and that was it. Conversion took me about 6-8 month all in all, and finally the shiftpoints at WOT seem to be "ok", the brackets are where they belonged to be in the first place ect.....hoped it was the easy swap magazines wrote about, fine-tuning it wasn`t for me!

Good luck with it, still cool to have an OD.

Well the tranny is back in and running. Works great better than before. I have recieved one reply from the original builder. Not sure what to do the length of time is against me but not the mileage ( 5000 ). He did say he doesn't use new steels if the old ones are good. The problem I have is the front stator that broke is just a standard stator and the big snap ring wasn't in place letting things move around a little. It never was consistant. The shift points seem to change along with the firmness of the shifts. The guy runs an ad stating he builds performance transmissions. I gave him a full description of my car, power train, weight, etc. He tells me no problem he can build me a transmission that will work just fine as long as I don't put slicks on it and take it to the track. That was fine with me a lot of people won't gaurantee parts that are raced. Anyway when the transmission comes
to me there is a discalaimer in there. It says if you plan on getting on your big heavy Buick and burning the tires you better bring a basket to pick up the parts. I was never comfortable with it from the time I put it in. I babied it all the time. What a waste. I probably should have returned it and ate the shipping and maybe the purchase price. Sorry for the long story but I'm a little p-ssed.
