Hi guys, I need to know what mph range I should expect a properly adjusted 2004-R trans to shift at. Right now I'm shifting from 1-2 at about only 10 mph and 2-3 at about 30-35 mph and 3-4 not till after 50 mph. This doesn't seem quit right to me but this is the first 2004-R I've ever played with. The trans was built by Vince Janice in Dayton,Oh. and set up to shift with a WOT run at 5200-5400 rpm. Tire diameter is 28.0" and I'm running 3.50 gears. I have a JW 9.5" 3800 rpm lock-up converter internally grounded so I can lock it up with a switch under the dash. This trans is run behind a JW 470 making almost 600 HP and its in my 1985 Regal weighing 3500 lbs. I haven't been driving it but for a few blocks at a time because the shifting doesn't seem right and I don't want to damage anything. When it does shift it is fast and hard with no discernible rpm lose. Any info is greatly appreciated. Roger

The Vince Janis, Janis Transmissions, that I know is out of Akron, OH. You may want to talk to him and get his view on this. Here is his info:

I have one of his 200-4R transmissions in my car. It does shift quick and around 4700 rpm's if I remember right if left to itself. I also have an electric lock-up switch. But I can easily just manually shift the car and shift at 6000 rpm's when at the track.

Definitely get the builder's take. Did they know the gears and tire size when being built? 200-4r's are a real pain in the rear to get the automatic shift points "right" and it has very little to do with the cable adjustment. It has a complex governor compared to the hydromatic transmissions, and the pan has to be removed to adjust it. My thoughts are anything above 3.42 gears out back and it starts getting real tricky to get the trans to shift at the right time at part throttle, usually shifts early, though WOT tuning isn't exactly a walk in the park either.

I have one in my Firebird with 4.56 gears and I modified the governor quite a bit and it still short shifts on me pretty badly, though it'll chirp second gear when it short shifts at moderate throttle (with a six cylinder and a spool no less!), it just isn't right. I drive it similar to a manual valvebody 90% of the time though. I plan on putting 3.42's in it soon, and it should be interesting to see how that effects the shift timing.

Vince is a great guy. Hopefully he can ID your trans and it's build.

I have a 2004r behind my nailhead. Its from extreame automatics, Lonnie Diers. I love it . I have 373 out back and he suggested the set up from bowtie for adjusting the tv cable. Like 70 gsconv said, its a pain to get right. I played with it with small test drives and I think its pretty close. Mine shifts at 5000 exactly where he said it would. Whish I had him make it shift at 5400 :Dou:
