Can some one explain to me about the 2004r's. Earlier and later models. what cars they came in and how to tell the difference. Any and all info is appreciated. Thanks!
This will help a bit: http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/oftrn.htm Scroll down about 20% of the way to the 200-4r section. I used to have a nice link for that, but AOL managed to mess that up for everybody.ou: This Tag ID breakdown should also help: http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/pictureguides/tranny/transguide.html [edit] Found it!! http://web.archive.org/web/20070128173316/http://members.aol.com/powerrslid/thm2004r.html
Most widely used because of the universal fit bell housing;Fits behind almost all gm rear drive engines: found in almost ANY GM midsize or fullsize car. Avoid ANY made before 1984. Most of them use troublesome hydraulic lockup, and very poor performance (High dollar to upgrade) Primary stck good ones are BQF and BRF, from 84/85 & 86/87 GN/ T-types. Other good ones were in chevy montecarlo SS. (CHZ, i think) All cases are the same for all from 84 up. All will require a rebuild if stock; minimum upgrades are to 10 or 13 vane pump, hardened support, and upgraded clutch packs. Some parts for governor and speedo gears are getting hard to find if you require changing to reflect your rear gears. One thing I recommend is getting the TV cable to carburetor kit (see TV made EZ) from Bowtie Overdrives to improve longevity and performance. This is one of the easiest solutions to a CRITICAL set up on these trans. Easy to install any 200-4r in our buicks. See the post above referenced items.
