2011 Buick Stock Appearing Race Class & Recap of 2010 BSA

Who's planning to run the Buick Stock Appearing Class at the GS Nats?

The 2011 GS Nats are right around the corner and I wanted to encourage anyone that has a stock appearing Buick to consider running the Buick Stock Appearing (BSA) class. Many of you have cars that fit this class perfectly and there’s a place for anyone, regardless of what year Buick you have or what e.t. your car can lay down.

The rules are pretty simple and everyone has an equal chance to win since the cars are run off of indexes that are based on your personal qualifying time. This is not a cut-throat competitive class, it’s a group of guys that enjoy racing their stock appearing Buicks and want to have fun. Despite being put out in the first round (thanks Nick Sloop), I still had a great time. In fact I never heard anyone in the class have anything but positive comments about the class and their fellow racers. There is a lot of great camaraderie in this class.

Come on out and race your stock appearing Buick!

I think the rules are still the same as before. Here they are: http://buickgsclubofamerica.yuku.com...Appearing.html

    GS Nationals Buick Stock Appearing

    1. This class is for STOCK APPEARING and STOCK SOUNDING Buicks from the years 1960-1974 only with no visible modifications. No fiberglass. Factory glass must be in place.

    2. Full interior must be stock including shifters. Aftermarket safety belts and roll bars ok. Aftermarket gauges ok.

    3. Engine compartment must appear stock. No aftermarket headers or carbs. Iron exhaust manifolds must be retained. Stock, Edelbrock B4B/Performer, and Poston S-Divider will be the only intake manifolds allowed but they must be painted engine color. Stock Iron, TA aluminum Stage 1, Edelbrock and Bulldog aluminum stock appearing cylinder heads legal but must be painted engine color. Casting numbers and date codes will not be checked. Stock fuel pump and stock fuel line from stock pump to carb must be in place. Electric fuel pumps ok. Stock appearing alternators only. Wiper motors must be in place. No electric water pumps or electric fans. Very minor chrome dress up items are allowed. No cool cans. Any ignition may be used, but distributor must appear stock. Stock air cleaner must be used, though air cleaner lid may be inverted.

    4. Any gear/ GM trans/converter combination ok. No clutchless transmissions or trans brakes.

    5. Factory front and rear suspensions only. Rear upper adjustables ok as are "No-Hop Bars". Front swaybar optional. Aftermarket springs, shocks and air bags allowed. GM rear ends only. Brake upgrades limited to stock type and must be stock appearing.

    8. Stock fuel tank must be in place. No lowered sumps. No externally mounted gauges.

If you are still on the fence about running in 2011, take a look at this brief recap of the BSA from 2010. Cool cars, and lots of fun.

BSA had 8 entries in 2010 and the cars ranged from ’67 – ’73, with e.t.s in the 14s all the way down to the 11s.

When the smoke all settled, the 2010 BSA winner was Keith Egan with his sinister black ’70 GS 455, with the runner-up spot going to Michael Littlejohn with his red-hot ’72 Stage 1 Sun Coupe. The fact that Keith had the quickest car isn’t why he won; he won because he ran close to his qualifying time and had good reaction times. So don’t let his blazing 11 sec e.t.s scare you away. Come on out and race!

Congrats again to the BSA winner for 2010, Keith Egan. The car is as beautiful as it is fast. It's no lightweight either. Notice it even has A/C.

    Other BSA participants included:
Phil Roitman with his '73 Stage 1. I had never seen anyone wrinkle a regular street radial tire before, until I saw this car at BG. Phil can launch this car!

One of the most impressive cars in my opinion was Randy Hollister's all stock, all original, high-mileage, unrestored, '71 GS 455. Randy gets the long distance award for this group because he came all the way from Arizona to run in this class. That's dedication. This car is a low compression, non-Stage 1 and still almost got into the 13's using a set of tires he barrowed from Dave Hemker.

One of the perennial participants is Nick Sloop with his '70 GS 455. Don't let the hubcaps fool you, Nick is a contender. Heck he had no problem putting me out in the first round!

This beautiful '70 Stage 1 belongs to Jim Jerichow and it runs as good as it looks. He's a heck of a nice guy too!

Dave Hemker is a long-time racer in the stock class with his '70 GS. Dave is another class act and even loaned his spare tires to a fellow racer.

This '67 is my bucket of bolts. I won the award for most dents and dullest paint, so at least I didn't go home empty handed.

Nice writeup on the class, thanks. I havent had time to do any promoting of my own, so its much appreciated.

The class is a lot of fun, the racers seem to enjoy it. I'm surprised there aren't 20 cars in the class.

I am bringing my car back again this year after bringing Mike Littlejohn's car last year. Mike's car was wrecked bad a few months ago, so its off the frame and being restored to better than before.

Me, Mike and Graig will be at the motel behind the Red Roof, so we hope to see everyone there.:3gears:

Dave Hemker loaned me a set of rear slicks so I could launch more consistently. I snuck past him in the first round, with the help of tires. Dave and the rest of the competitors in this class are the best of people, I have tremendous respect for all of them. If you can cut a light in this class...You can win it. Give it try, you won't be sorry. Hopefully I will make it down this year and enjoy a cup of cheer with all of my BSA buddies. :beers2:

Would a stock appearing car be able to run with you guys if it had fiberglass parts on it? Say a deck lid or a hood that were stock appearing. I was at BG for my fourth year in a row and just picked up 70 GS. I like your class, it intrigues me.
