For those of you who are thinking about going to the 290H Cam, here's what it sounds like at idle and in gear..... I could listen to this video over & over.... :beer ....that is, when I'm not able to go in the garage and hear it live! I have read many posts on this web site that this is about the biggest cam you want to run to be able to keep power brakes and keep the car street friendly, I agree. This cam likes to run when the engine is warm, until it's warm you are feathering the throttle and moving from D to N to blip the throttle. Once warm.... it runs great. enjoy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iemJoSZkAE Vinman out.....
Sounds good VinMan. I run that cam in my iron headed 462 and have not had any problems with the brakes. It is a little grumpy on the cold starts but that is to be expected with a cam like that. I also have a lot of initial timing in it, and some mods to the carb to make it idle nicely at 750 to 800 in gear. What type of exhaust system are you running?
It idles in P/N at 925-950 and 800-825 in gear which is just fine. Just like you the brakes are fine and it is grumpy until it gets warm. I'm running TA full length headers and 2 1/2 mandrel H pipe club exhaust with dynomax mufflers. I will be upgrading to 3" from the headers via X-pipe to the mufflers sometime next year when I find a few extra $$ hundies burning a hole in my pocket. The other question was why did I choose this Cam..... I first chose the TA413, but the Buick friend who I got the short block from kept on me saying the TA290 would better fit my needs of having about the largest Cam you would want for power brakes, good street manners and the rest of my set-up. Bottom line, this Cam is perfect for me. L8
Yes, stage 2 heads. Also chose to stay with performer vs SP1 to keep stock air cleaner. With an SP1 numbers would be a little higher especially from 4500 up
Devon..... you want to go for a ride..... I also want to go for a ride, but it's raining here. Not quite raining at my house yet, but rain is coming today and could happen at any minute. It sure is fun to drive, 1st gear at any speed full throttle is a joke and i have 295's on the back and TA no hop traction bars....:eek2: The plan is to buy myself a christmas gift...I do every year... I mean come on, I'm the boss at home right..:bglasses: .... hold on one second, I just wanted to make sure my wife wasnt looking over my shoulder....:TU: So this year it will be two MT ET Street Radials (DR's) and I will turn the letters in on the front BF radials. Maybe I'll finally be able to see what this can do in 1st gear nailed till it shifts. Like I said earlier first is useless even if I feather into it, once it's fully nailed in 1st the tires are spinning, no way around it. L8
Sounds nice. Maybe we should have a forum for cams at idle sounds.:bglasses: Something I would never get tired of hearing.:beer Bob H.
That's actually a really good idea. It could be a "sticky" where you post your video link and you need to list the Cam specs, manufacturer model and or number and any other specifics (which are in most of our Auto-Sig's anyway) Anyone seraching for a Cam will get to listen to a few of their possible choices.
I like it the sticky idea. I do not know my compression which will have a huge impact on cam selection. Once I fig. my C.ratio I will start a thread new thread. Most radical cam with manual brakes that is street able? I love the lump
My problem is I can't get my short idle video to download. I moved it to Photo Bucket but that didn't work either. Probably operator error on my part. Bob H.
about the extra ponies for the SP1.... yes..... I know.... you got 31HP and I'm sure my set up would be the same, but I wanted to keep this as stock looking as possible. The heads are painted as is the intake, with air cleaner on no one knows it has a holley unless they are smart enough to notice the earls braided fuel line It's even hard to tell it has headers since from the top down it looks stock, unless you are really looking... and at that point I can just say it's a a 550+ HP & TQ motor, I will have this GSX until I die and the next owner will get all the stock parts bubble wrapped from my shed.... so what does that translate to: GFY to anyone who objects (in a nice way, just having fun) G = Go Y = Yourself I think you can figure out what the F stands for....... :TU: VinMan....:3gears:
