Were Would someone get a set of 300 pistons? I would like a forged set. My buddy just got a complete 63 lark and we plan to pu this 300 I have in it. It has alum. heads and a 4 barrel carb. He wants to get about 11-12 to 1 in it with forged pistons and then put some NOS on it. Were could he get some headers or some flanges to have some made at? Not To mention is there anyone else out there besides Poston that makes a cam for the 300? Could we port the exaust manifolds like they do the 455? What about after market Dist? We hope to put some novas (63-67)in there place with this car. We have a 9inch gettin cut up for us as wellas a small tub. How do I geta 5 bolt pattern on the front?? any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Doug & his friend John

    300 Parts

Good news. Venolia Pistons lists about 4 part numbers for the 300. You can order them in a variety of dome configurations from the shallow dish to a pop-up style. Many grinders have cams available. Poston is one and Kenne-Bell another. Reed, Crane, Crower and Isky have different grinds as well. As far as I know, Poston is the only place to get header flanges as they are the only supplier to offer headers for the 300. I looked around for quite a time to find a set and Poston was the only one I could find.

    Doug,

I built a '63 Special a few years back and went through the same thought process as you're going through. I couldn't find an easy way to upgrade to 5-bolt front hubs. I purchased 3.5" x 15" Weld Wheels for the front, because I was bracket racing the car as well. I later sold the car and wheels separately. A man with a late model Mustang bought them for his car. We fitted them up in my driveway to confirm the fit. So, that may be a starting place.

However, a couple o' years later, I came across a stock 1963 Olds F-85 and low and behold...5-bolt hubs and a 4-speed automatic transmission behind the little 215 V-8.

The only other thing I considered was unbolting the removable front cross-member (3 bolts), and fitting up one of the many street rod front suspension assemblies. Many of them have similar cross-member designs and just about all come with coil-over shocks and a-arm suspensions.

That's a nice combination your friend is building. Very lightweight, minimal cutting/welding. If you go to a later model automatic, like a TH-350 or one of the overdrive 4-speeds, you'll have to modify the transmission tunnel to get the engine even close to level.

Keep us posted on this project. I have a friend with a '61 dust-collector whose been talking about the same configuration.

    Good luck.

This is all great news. I never would have thought about a front end from one of the hot rod guys. I have a couple of buds that have a 32,27 and alist of other old fords and chevys that have new fronts on them.
    Thanks For the info

Unless I'm mistaken, the Buick 350 distributor will drop right in...Thought I heard somewhere that the HEI will work, but something about clearancing the front of the intake manifold??? Anyone know if that's right or not???

    300

I have a costom ground solid lifter cam in my 300
ground by ISKY, they list many grinds but a costom grind
is usually the best way to go. I also use a Mallery unilight
distributer for the 350 MSD also makes one. You can also use a new timing cover (350) TA performance offers pistonsand other things for the 300's. also if you are gonna run a 300 hard
buy the buick engine book and do all the oiling mods block and front cover . My 64 specail runs 12.70's weighing 3100#with
    a .030 300" th 350and 4.10 gears.

I just put a bottle on it and a new hughes torque converter
and going to milan dragway i'll let ya know how that goes.:TU:

In case anybody isn't aware of it, Sean Etson is THE MAN when it comes to 300 small blocks.

Sean, would you mind posting a picture of the intake manifold you use and giving a little information about it. Thanks.

Sean are you using the aluminum heads on your combo? and how streetable is your car? How bigof a cam are we talking about and were did you get your headers? Should I just get the exaust manifolds ported?? or what? Sorry for all the questions but I think I remember someone saying you have the fastest 300 in the country. I even think your in a GSXtra. I will have to look. Any ideas would be great to have from you.
    Thanks Doug

Could you send me the blue print and details of your intake? I know a really good fabricator and I would like to get one made for me. You really need to spell all this out for us (or just me). What are the specs on your car? Carb size? Compression ratio?

    intake

Well there are no blue prints i built the intake adapter on the actual block and heads that its on because they are both heavily milled and modified, so a blue print ov it wouldn't work for a different combo anyways, compression ratio was calculated at 12.3 :1 and i am using a holley HP series 650 cfm carb, a 215 intake is roughly 1 inch narrowerthan a 300's, i started with 1/2" aluminum for the sides but then it was surfaced to true it up then the 3 pieces were welded together while fastened to the intake , then machined to its finished size to fit the engine. there is a ton of hand grinding and finish work involved:eek2: TONS i performed all the work except the welding myself
