I get lots of calls for this part. It fits into the side of the transmission. The speedometer cable plugs into it and it causes the speedometer and odometer to register. I can't understand why any car designer would think that making these pieces out of plastic is a good idea. Anyone know if these are reproduced?

No need to reproduce them, GM still stocks plenty of them. I've never had a problem with them being plastic, lasts the life of the car unless something seizes up. This page will list the part #'s and tell you how to figure out which ones you need with tire and gear changes.

BTW, the gear you are referring to is called the speedometer driven gear. The part that holds the gear and plugs into the side of the trans is called the sleeve. There are two sleeves depending on which gear you need, one holds gears 35-39, and one holds 40-45. The sleeves are also available from GM. The speedometer drive gear is located on the trans output shaft. It is either plastic or metal, and is either clipped on or pressed on. To calculate which driven gear you need, you must know how many teeth are on the drive gear. You can count them through the sleeve hole while turning the driveshaft (trans in neutral) Hope that helps.

That's an excellent response to my question. Thank you very much, and the link will be very helpful in the future.
