64 Aluminum 300 splash guard on rocker arm shot?

  1. Hello everyone,
In many numerous posts I have lamented what a crappy rebuild :af: was done to the engine in my Buick at the discrection of the former owner of my 64 LeSabre. It had a horrible tapping sound, and I thought it had a collapsed lifter or valve problem. It was also leaking oil from every gasket, and was painted Chebby orange:puzzled:, so no one had to twist my arm to do a motor swap on this "rebuild". Right now I have a 300 2bbl out of a '65 in it (ITS STILL ALL BUICK! (a few of hick-ups with the swap, but easy for the most part)) so it is drivable, but my long-term plans are to rebuild the original half aluminum engine correctly. So I have the '64 engine on the stand, take off the valve covers, and low and behold, the splash guard for the PCV valve is being nibbled away. I've inserted three pictures of it below. Could someone direct me as to why this went wrong? The guard seems to be in the right position, but as you can tell, it is obviously not. Could anyone shed some light as to what went wrong? Is this the wrong part, wrong orientation, or were the rebuilders from Mars?

    Thanks for the help.

Attached is a pic from the 64 Chassis manual which should clearly show that the shield was improperly installed. This caused the rockers to rub against the shield and wear it out.
I would be really concerned about the rest of the motor if the rebuilder couldn't even put the shield on right.
    Hope this answers your question.

    Regards,
    Mark

  3. Mark,
Thanks for helping me out. I think this is a few times you have saved me. :) I plan on going through the motor before it goes back in the car. For one I have to get the Chevy Orange off of it. Could you tell me which page of the Chassis Manual you scanned the picture out of? I have a copy, I just never thought to look :Dou:
