I currently have a 65 Skylark. Have had 2 other 65s and a 67 in the past all of which the trunks leaked when I got them and still leaked when I got rid of them. Just installed a new Metro seal. This seal is hollow . Others in the past were solid rubber. We installed it with the correct glue. Being hollow there is little to no pressure when the lid is closed. Got caught in the rain the other day and water came in. I later had someone inside the trunk with a light and we hosed it down. Coming between the lid and seal at the side for sure. Can anyone suggest anything here. Maybe a different brand of seal? I`m sure this has been a headache for many others. Thanks, John
Probably not the seal, even w/o a seal the trunk shouldn't really leak. I'm guessing the gutter is rotted, it's a common problem.
Another thing I suspect with early Buick A bodies is the trunk lid itself being warped/bent such that it's arched in the middle so that the sealing along the sides of the lid is compromised. I can see it in my trunk lid how it sits lower at the ends (rear window and back at the bumper vs. in the middle). Maybe from decades of shutting the trunk lid against an overstuffed trunk?? Too many suitcases?
Take a straightedge or large level across the seal lip on the body and note how much arch is there vs. the sealing surface on the trunk lid. Or modeling clay can be used.
It's most likely either the taillight seals or the halo trim holes that pass between the back window and truck.
Hey guys thanks for the help. I`m seeing a very slight warpage on the driver side where the deck lid closes. I`m going to try another seal that is not hollow and may have more pressure against it when the lid is closed. John
