It is a segment of wire designed to break the circuit first rather than let a major short circuit melt the entire wiring harness. It sounds like you had a major event and there is a good bet that the links were taken out. They are surge protectors if you will located near the starter. You may have to remove the starter to install new ones.
Did not know that Tom. You are a nailhead era pro what is your Dx of her problem? Was there a Little Fuse module on the inner fender in 66 that served that purpose ?
Does it click when you turn the key? If so, your problem is most likely the starter. If it doesn't even click, and you know the battery is good, your problem is the neutral safety switch mounted on top of the steering column under the dash. It won't let the starter engage unless the gear shifter is either in park or neutral.
Check the battery cables and posts!!!!!!!!! Maybe the connections are dirty. One time I had a car that would not start and I just replaced the battery a few months before. I tried a different battery and it started right away. How did you test the starter?
Have you checked the neutral safety switch on the steering column yet? I have a '66 just like yours and will be glad to talk you through the whole system and help you find the problem if you want to call or Email me direct. stonesautomotive@juno.com or 252-885-6817
Looks like Brian saved the DAY :beer :beer :beer :beer So what did you do to get it running???? jerseysky66
My wiring was wrong on the starter and I have a floor shifter and the colum was in gear. :spank: So when I hooked the starter up the wires where crossed. Thats what I get for not marking my wires.
