Another rookie here, bought a 67 340 last April (for my son) but soon realized I wanted it more than he did... So now it's mine!
Body is in excellent shape so is the interior..but it has been blowing out black smoke and just isn't running properly. The engine is original and has 150,000 miles on it. Wanting a little help as to what to do. Should I check into rebuiding engine or does it sound like it needs it? Thanks for any help. Greg :)

Black smoke and not blue smoke all the time?

I'm sure the motor needs to be rebuilt anyway, but it could be a couple different things. One, the car could be running way too rich and blowing black smoke, or it could be blowing out all of the carbon buildup (depending on how long it has been running this bad). If that is the case, you might try doing what some of the others on this board recommended and pouring a little Marvel Mystery Oil down the carb. I did this a couple days ago, and was very skeptical, but was surprised at how much better the car seems to run now. It also could be a matter of the car burning oil (although I believe it would be more of a blue-ish colored smoke) and in that case the only way to solve it would be rebuilding (although I'm no expert). I think that if you don't want to tear into the motor just yet, I would rebuild the carb after trying the Marvel Mystery Oil. That's just my opinion.:TU:

Jim, Yes it's black and I didn't really see any blue..The car was dieseling so I took it to a shop and they adjusted the idle. At first the smoke was just when I started it up but it's gotten a little worse... It leaves black on the drive from the pipes...

You really need to check the timing if you haven't done so already, it's very easy to do and can be the cause of many different problems if it isn't right. I would reset the timing, run some marvel mystery oil in it to try and clean out the motor a little bit, then adjust the idle mixture so that it runs cleaner. It doesn't sound to me like anything more than just needing a major tuneup.

Thanks Chris, I'll pick up some of that...It doesn't hold oil, I have to put in a quart every few weeks....but the smoke doesn't appear blue. I also had to change the valve cover gaskets.
