Hello all. Working on putting together a wish list for this winter and I am going to look into rims and tires. My car is a hard top and dark blue in color. I think it would look good with a set of cragar ss wheels. I'd like to do a little bigger rear wheel to eat up some of the space in the wheel well. However I don't want to go so big that I need to get into anything major. I just think something a little bigger would compliment the stance of the car. Any suggestions on size? Or other wheels that you think would look sweet? Post some pics if you got them! Here's a current side view of my car.

The more information you supply, the better the feed back. What is on the car now, rim size and tires?

    Eric,
That is a great looking car! I just want to say I am a stock guy. That car would look good with Firestone Red Side Walls! What ever you do good luck!:beer

I agree with Ron, redlines would really work well with your color combo.

The only other advice I can give is if you go a lot bigger on the rear. A 15x8 with a 5" back space will fit under the 68-69 rear quarter. I'm able to fit a 275/60-15 back there with out rubbing.

Those redlines intrigue me...I'll post my specs tomorrow. They're escaping my mind right now. The only thing I can remember is they're 14"rims.

I just like to fit the fattest tire that will fit in the back with out rubbing 15x8 on the rear.
275x60x15 and 245x60x15 on a 15x7 rim on the front. The rears are 4.5 back space 15x8. :TU:

Hi Eric, If you decide to stay with the stock Skylark chrome rallys, you may want to consider going to the correct center caps for your '68 GS. It looks like you have the later model caps with the decal medallions.
Check out my website at www.buickcenters.com and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Mitch

Nick I love the look of that. That's exactly what I am looking for. Thanks!

Mitch I'll check that out! Thanks! I learn something new every day!

Nick... No issues with clearance? When I feel up between the tire and wheel well it doesn't feel like there's a ton of space but I don't know the ins and outs on tires and all.

You need more back space on the wheel. An 8" rim will need 5" B.S. to fit a big tire like 275/60-15 on a 68-69 car. The 70-72 cars with 4.5" B.S., no problem, but not on the 68-69.

That's what I was wondering Larry. But his appears to be a 69.

I think Nick is mistaken about the back spacing. I bet he has 5", not 4 1/2" Everything I have ever read on this site says 5" back space on the 8" wheel to fit that tire on a 68 or 69. The 70-72's are different, 4 1/2" B.S. gets it done, not on the 68-69

I believe that 4.5 is correct for the 15x8s. That is what I would recommend. But who can say because GM never made a 15x8 rally rim. Remember that the outer rim shell is welded to the inner center part. I would feel that 5 inches just puts more stress on the rim as the center is way offset. Maybe I'm too cautious but you're running some huge hoops at that point. IMHO. Mitch

Mitch, FWD cars like my 98 Riviera have over 5" of back space on a 7" aluminum wheel. Lots of pre 69 Buicks run 5" back spacing on the 8" wheel. That is the only way to fit the bigger tires. That's a strong heavy wheel. I don't think it makes any difference at all. It's only 1" positive offset. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with a factory wheel like that.

Good info guys. Appreciate the conversation. I'm not concerned about the strength between 4.5 to 5 bs. I just don't want to blindly get something and find out that it doesn't fit.

I believe the 4.5" and a 275 might work if you cut the lip and wheel well molding back almost to the verticle part of the quarter, but it is still an ugly fit and if the axle moves while maneuvering it could still rub or cut the tire or worse damage the quarter. The 5" back space centers the rim in the wheel well with no rubbing.
