Hey, I'm new to this so I could use some help. : D I have a '68 Riviera with rusted out floor pans. I'm guessing I'll need to order some sheet metal, shape it, and then weld it in place. lol Though, I'm probably missing quite a few steps, which is why I made this thread. Any advice?
Probably the hardest part of repairing any floor is matching all the underfloor supports and bracing if they are rust damaged too. Flat panels can easiliy be cut and patched with hand fabricated pieces easily - but the support members are a different story. The seat anchors, and seat belt mounts may also need repair too. Good luck on your endeavor - it's a labour of love ! :beer :TU:
I don't have to tell you replacing floor panels is is big job. If you are going through all that work I'd suggest getting floors cut out of a donor car. That way when you are done, you have a nice solid job with integrity and it looks good. Of course if you are on a tight budget and just want to patch the car up so your feet don't drag on the ground, do the plain sheet metal and make your own. Having said that, unless the car is a GS or has sentimental value to you, I would not consider replacing floors in a 68. 68s are too easy to find in really nice shape for very reasonable money.
Nice job Gordon ! :beer :TU: Once the interior is installed, it will look brandy new. I had seriously considered replacing the floor pans in a very rough GS from a good donor parts car, but opted to find another Riv that had decent floors, as JZRIV suggested. It was just too big a project to take on. :eek2:
Wow nice job. I bet you have now become an expert with the MIG welder...that is if you weren't before you started! Looks very nice. I can certainly appreciate all the work you put into that project.
