I guess this may be the place to ask. A co-worker has a 77 Sport Fury Wagon parts car that has a posi rear. He says it has a bolted on cover and I am guessing it is a Dana unit. Haven't checked the ratio yet, but this car was used for towing. It has leaf springs and we would like to know if this rear will fit in a 69 Road Runner that he has that has an open rear. The unit in the RR (8 3/4"?) is a welded type housing and the pumpkin comes out from the front. Questions are will it bolt up the same using the RR leaf springs and are the widths the same between the 69 and 77 so that this conversion will work. If the 77 rear is worth the swap, he would like to keep it. If not, it goes to the scrap yard with the body. Any information is greatly appreciated. :TU: Thanks, Scott
I`m no Mopar expert, but I`m going to assume that the 77 rearend is an 8.25" rearend. There junk....its so easy to change the center section of the 8 3/4 in the RR.Try www.moparts.com I`m sure that someone is selling a center section for an 8 3/4" over there,or can get you in contact with someone who has one
I'm on Keith's wavelength on this one. It being a full size car, however, I would venture to guess that it is a 9 1/4". The end-to-end and perch dimensions are different from a RR. Keep the 8 3/4", it is a whole lot better. If it were me, the one in question would be going right to scrap with the rest of the car.
Thanks for the replies. I haven't had a look at that rear yet, but am thinking alone the same line. Better to just find a unit to fit the original housing and be done with it. Thanks :beer Scott
8 3/4 is a very good rear end. Very strong and durable and will hold up to anything. I wouldn't be surprised if the other rear end is a dana since it was used for trailering. Heavy duty. That's the same rearend used in Hemi cars for that reason. But I can't say whether it is or not, tho.
The 77 wagon probably has an 8 1/4" rear like said earlier, they were made by Chrysler if I'm not mistaken. Dana would usually make just the heavy duty and truck rears for Chrysler. I wouldn't call it junk, but you would be better served with an 8 3/4" for dependability, availability of parts and technical information.
