I have a 1971 Stage 1 unrestored original. It's solid all over no rust in trunk at lower corners no rust in front fender dog legs nothing. Only one small spot at lower most point right behind passenger rear wheel. Car only driven on dry road condition. There are some minor dings from kids bikes etc but thats it. Anyway paint is getting a bit tired. After wax it only holds shine for a few weeks so I'm looking at repaint. I'm not looking for a concours paint job but I want a good one. Car is lime mist and of course I'll sick with original color. I understand maybe some weather stripping may have to be replaced due to age hen removed for painting but holy cow ! I was quoted $7,000 from a fellow GS club member who has some 1st class show winning GSX's . This sounds like a hell of a lot to me. I was thinking $5,000 tops. Anyone have any words of wisdom for me. Anyone know a reputable shop in Northeast Ohio. There is no doubt the fellow who quoted me will do a very fine job, but what the heck !

not tooo bad but high....it all dpends on who you know and how many hours it takes to get done...are you having a complete strip to metal and major bodywork done?...i just had my painted and i would say its rates a 6 or 7 on the scale....cost me about 4 but i knew the owner very well and he gave me a hell of a deal so....now a complete strip down with all panles removed and maybe a rottiserie(sp?) quoted me about 28k so just base it on that..28 was the best job that can be done on a abody i think..so 7 is not too much i think :TU:

Well, with paint and body work you get what you pay for. 7k sounds about right in my book. I'd rather pay a little more than for someone to cut a few corners to try and save me some money. Sounds like the man you picked is the right guy for the job. Sounds like he does first class work and knows the cars in and out.

    thats a good price

i realize prices are less in the midwest than out here in crazy land, but if you've seen the mans work and like it and he said 7k, i think thats a decent price. :TU:

It never hurts to shop around. You should get the fellow to explain what he will do for the $7K. If it is a complete strip and quality repaint with some fudge for minor body work (dings take time too), addressing the spot on the quarter and correct color and some repairs (weather stripping, etc) it sounds about right. Paint alone can go for $10K(or more) easy for a concours job. But shop around and compare apples to apples. Also think about the hassle factor. If he is reliable, its worth alot!
Also, have you considered the chrome? You may find the bumpers need new chrome to go with the paint. Usually the older chrome will not go well with the new paint!

Had the chrome done in stages over the last few years cause it needed it and I wanted to save that portion for myself to do. I would not consider doing prep or re assemble on my own to save 20% of cost because I'm no good at it. I guess the best I could hope for if all goes well is a $5,000 price. I like the suggestion of watching my shop of choice on another job from start to finish as that will tell the tale. What are you guys paying out there for a quality paint job ?

wow thats pretty scary, $7,000 for a paint job. I probably would have fainted after hearing that especially after what I'm now paying to have my quarters panel, rocker panel, and window channels fixed by my welder. I had been saving for sometime and buying and rebuying items so I could have the best quality parts so its not like I'll have a lot on reserve afterwards. Then to find after I come that far and just need paint that I will have to fork over... I can't even type that amount in. The 1st paint job I had done cost me about $2500 - $3000 from a small shop across the street from where I was working. The owner had worked out a deal with me where I gave him a $500 deposit and paid him $100 a week till I was all paid up. Of course I had car back before I had finished paying. The paint they used was dupont, straight black with no other colors mixed in and it was base coat clear coat. I was happy for the most part with how it came out, nice deep shine plus it was a daily driver so I expect the unexpected to possibly happen, stone chips etc. I have a pic somewhere if you should care to see it was real nice for an affordable price. I hope I can find something close to that price range again. I mean for... still can't type that, I would be afraid to use the car because I'd want that paint to last for another 30 years, get my moneys worth. Good luck finding a place, I know thats a skill (painting) where they basically got you by the balls, not like you can just go home and do it yourself.

Being a bodyman/ painter myself, I would say you should get a pretty nice job for 7k.For that price they should strip the panels to bare metal , thats the only way to get a quality job ...

It's a big buck. I know the guy that qouted me is 1st rate. I think I'll need to shop. The good suggestion was to follow a job from inception to end. Them I'll have some confidence. I used an inexpensive shop once, back in the early 80's on a Cutlass I owned, and it was not a good thing when complete.

    Here's a flashback from around 1992-93...

Car: One slightly battered and rusty 71 GS 455

Body shop work: Installed new NOS GM quarters, clean used doors, NOS GM fenders, NOS core support, used trunk lid, used hood. Strip entire car to bare metal. Straighten frame, pull windshield post and remove kink in roof. Changed color from Sandpiper beige to black using Sikkens single stage urethane. Installed glass and various trim- $6,000 not including parts. The parts cost me another 1500 or so. And that was all over 12 years ago

The sad part is that no matter how much you spend, the paint (and whats underneath it) is not going to last forever. Everything starts to shrink after a while. Its only a matter of time before sanding scratches start appearing and filler starts to crack.

Actually Allen - you can! Of course there is a trick>>>Let me explain - Find the local VoTech High School near you and sign up for the after hours adult education class on body work. Most classes last 6 - 8 weeks and in that time they will show you how and help you paint your car. You pay the $100??? for the class, buy the paint, and use their equipment and paint booth. Sweet deal! I see guys take the class every time and they show up with a different car each time. They buy a junker, fix it up and sell it using the class resources! Pretty cool....

Yeah thats how I got me quarter skin installed years ago. A friend of mines was taking a welding class (boces) and a vender came by with quarter skins for various cars. My friend told me about it and I gave him the money for a skin and asked him to see if he could use my car as a class project. Job came out really nice and the cost to me $90 for the skin. Unfortunately I do not have the time for a course in bodywork and painting as much as I would love to learn. Hopefully in the future I can and will learn. For now I will do some price shopping and going by recommendations.
