Guys, I seem to remember that 70 GS cars had a slightly different trunk floor and rear package shelf than the 71-72 cars. This was for the evap system on the later models. Enlighten me, please. I have been told that the package shelf is also a little different. I will be looking at a car in the next few days, and want to be on clone patrol. I appreciate any light you can shed on the subject. Thanks, Rudy E
The pre-71 cars had no evaporative emission control (charcoal purge cannister in the LF fender well, vapor tank behind the back seat upper cushion) The 70 package tray has a slightly different cutout for a rear defrost than 71-2. Easiest way to tell is to look for the silver vapor tank.
George, I'll just throw in one quick thing...the above is true UNLESS the car in question is a 1970 model built with California emissions. 1970 CA emission cars received the same equipment as 1971 49 state cars.
Boy I hate to post this, Actually the 70 trunk pan is the same for both Calif and 49 state cars. Also, only the cars originally destined to be sold in California had the emissions, and they could have been built in Flint or in Fremont. The 70 emission cars had a unique system that bolted to the trunk floorpan directly above the rear axle. The only evidence in the trunk is 2 rivits that you can see behind the rear seat area. Sorry guys. Duane
Sheesh, just when you think you know something, along comes Duane to be a party pooper!   I am going to run and hide in the junk yard. Need to get some more parts! LOL ! :beer
Ok, I am going to join Brad in detention and make some spit balls for the next class session. Shooooooot, Brad, you and I need to get better at this or we will be spending all our free time in Buick detention.
George, You will have to ask Brad sometime about how he had points deducted from his car because he did not have the california emmission system on it. The fact that his car was built in Flint, for "Buick" was not even taken into consideration. Duane
You guys are the greatest! So, let's say that a 70 has been rebodied with a later rear clip. Upon inspection, can this be confirmed by eye, or not? Not that I expect that will be the case, but we have all seen plenty of incorrect cars. I am just trying to head off any issues pre visit. I know that bumper and other trim items are different, but the rear quarters and floors will be the same, right? Thanks, Rudy E
RudyE, If you use a 71 or 72 shell to back-half a 70 car it is real easy to tell. The rear shelf and trunk areas are different, as are numerous other little things. You would probably also end up with different date codes on the sheet metal. Duane
There are actually 3 different designs for the steel package shelf area, and sorry I do not have a digital camera so I can't help you there. The easiest way to ID a 71-72 body is by looking at the trunk area directly behind the rear seat. If it has the fuel vapor condensation unit (large silver unit) sticking through the trunk floor then it is a 71-72 body. Duane
The 70 cars (or at least the 70 flint built cars) also have different stamped embossings (the best I can describe it) on the front verticle surface of the trunk pan.
