For sure, real question are the late 71 cables same as early 72? :Do No:

Tim, Look at the block close. It is the correct one. Also the 71(late) and 72 positive cable have the same part # as shown. GM started making these NOS cables in black for some reason.

The only blocks I have seen were more or less solid where the cable passed through and with the slot for the rest of the wiring. So if they are the same cables M&H will have the positive ones under p/n 39496 (the one I had them make up for the vert).

Tim, You had me second guessing myself so I dug out my old block I cut apart to use on my reproduction spring ring cable and it is identical to the NOS in the picture. The one I hacked up came out of a 70 spring ring cable. I have another one with part of cable still sticking in it somewhere but cannot find it. Maybe there were two types made? When the thing is tucked in the sleeve it is all fo nothing anyway. The cool thing about the NOS is it is pre bent to fit contours exact at the starter end. I thing repros are pretty much straight. I have no idea how GM managed that one.

I'll buy that...I'd go get mine but its in the car and I don't want to mess with it!!LOL And you are right, once in the sleeve you don't see it except the ends...it just struck me as odd.

That is the one thing I don't like about the repros, they come with a big flat tab at the starter end, it takes up more room and you have to be careful that it doesn't touch the other wires, plus you gotta get that starter bend in there and its tough to do. I don't know why they can't just put the right end on it...so I have been saving all those ends I see, a guy can carefully pry the tabs open just a bit and then put it on the new cable and solder it, fits way better.

Funny thing today, I was cleaning out the trunk on the stage 1 since its getting appraised tomorrow (yeah I admit I use the trunk to store boxes of stuff over the winter) and the battery cables off that 75 estate wagon that i parted were in there. Identical to the 72 on the negative side (code and all), positive cable has wrong code but otherwise looks correct. Go figure.

I have no idea why they cannot put correct end on pos cable. Looks real easy to make.....I guess 71 negative cable with no pigtail ground had real short usage in late 71. Wonder if they had problem with ground on this cable?

OK you had me second guessing myself too so here ya go, I went and dug out the only spare I have. Note its solid except for holes. other side is the same except they are slots, not holes, about 1/16" wide. So basically solid. So there are two styles, probably just different suppliers. Interesting.

By the way, does anybody have a 71 GS 455 convertible with a build date AFTER 05D? What is the cut off date for production anyhow for 1971 model year?

My small block 71 GSX had a build date of 6/22/71. It was almost a 72 car.

PS. Steve, when I bought my 71 Stage 1 GSX it came in boxes. I know how you feel.

    When I say disassembled,I mean D I S A S S E M B L E D!
the A-arms even had the bushings removed. Fortunately I have Plenty of time and money (yeah RIGHT). At least I have Patience. NOPE that goes away and I just have to leave it be, sometimes. Definitely don't want to screw up this car. Although I am going to put in a beefed-up BRF 2004R trans with a different rear end with 3.42 gears under it :Brow:

Have to look it the storage building under "electrical", but if memory serves me, the positive cable had aftermarket AKA parts store ends on it. Body work is higher priority, first. Engine is back form shop friday, and spare engine i got from local salvage yard from 71 electra 225 wagon with same build code :bla: . couldn't beat that coincidence with a sledgehammer, much less a stick. complete fan to flexplate, 7041540 MF0321 Q-jet to oil pan. Too bad that it had a BC 400 trans, not a BB or BA . There are various 68-76 BBB cars there that have not been touched for over 20 years at this secret yard that exists near me. Think I'm BS? ask Ryan Craig; he's been there with me. Unfortunately most sheet metal is rusted through on a lot of cars. sportwagons, gs 400, skylarks, electras
430's 455's TH400's, don't know about any switch pitch trans, as I'm not familiar with them
Any body need a set of 72 stage 1 heads:bla: :bla: ? thats what was on the GS engine when i bought it and a Poston intake and holley.

    Guys,
I have the answer regarding pigtail/no-pigtail.

My 72 assembly manual states the cables were changed on 6-29-71, and according to the drawings that is when both the 350 & 455 neg pigtails were added along with the associated hardware. That also means the pigtails were there at the start of the 72 production year.

    DL,
My small block 71 GSX (06B) was actually built on 6-25-71 and is SCO#717. I don't have that style buildsheet for the BB GSX so I don't know what that SCO# was.

As far as the car coming in boxes, it sure made it easy to tell which parts I needed, and their date codes.

Tim, I have never seen a plastic block like that. Thanks for the answer on the pigtail Duane. I guess I will not use one then. Also a friend was working on a 71 GS-350 for someone and build was 6C or D I cannot remember which.
Car had white crayon paint code on fireewall.............................................

Here is a battery question. I see from part numbers in assembly manual that 350 and 455 had different side post batteries but what is correct Delco code for a 71 455?? The reason I ask is the Pontiac Guys at Ames offer R89S and a R89W. They say the W code was used on HO455's. Just wondering if these are same as GS455? The are both available as add acid or maint. free. They all cost a whopping $325 so you will have to want one bad. Does not look like anyone offers topper for side post.

    Boy,
You guys want all the answers.

I believe the part numbers are on pages 12-8.8 & 12-8.9 Can you cross reference them?
    Duane

PS. Did you notice that the L6 & 350 cars with heavy duty batteries used the same ones as the 455 cars?
