i've got a 71 GS that is currently brown/brown/brown. what would this have looked like originally? my paint is beyond shining up and i'm going to talk with the body man this weekend. just want to have some ideas to throw around with him. i'm thinking maybe copper with a black vinyl top? what do you guys have? thanks and looking forward to some suggestions/pics
Here is a triple brown Skylark convertible - looks pretty nice. With a brown interior you could go with a few different color exteriors if you don't keep the original brown - Burnished Copper, Burnished Cinnamon, Bittersweet Mist, or white are colors I think would be compatible with the original interior.
Here is another brown colored Buick - 1970 GS convertible clone: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Buic...820QQitemZ180469913632QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks
>>Your Buick's paint looks like Burnished Cinnamon - my former '71 GSX clone was also Burnished Cinnamon - I did have it repainted when I owned it and it came out one shade darker than the original paint.
The data plate from the cowl, drivers side , just below the windshield will give you the interior & exterior colour codes. Look for TR XXX for interior & XXX PNT for paint. Yours should be XX F, the F standing for brown vinyl upper body. Once you get the ## we can possibly get it matched to another member's car. I bet it was a pretty classy paint scheme new & shined up. Another excellent site with some good pics of members cars: www.buickperformance.com
Your interior should be saddle. It was the only thing close to brown in 71. exteriro Color may be rosewood. Only other color close to that in 71. I think it was code 78 on the data plate.
thank you all very much this gives me some good stuff to work with. i'll print some of these off and talk it over with my body guy on my options
The majority of "quality" paint and body shops will paint a few test panels for you to evaluate before they spray the color coats on the car. Depending on the color to be painted a different color sealer and primer could be used and it wil affect the hue or the final product a lot with some colors. I have some of my cars painted the same color as they were from the factory( i.e. the painter used the paint code to select and mix the correct color and weight ratios that make up that particular color) On other cars I have gone away from the correct color. My personal preference is that if the car is a numbers-matching correct car always paint it the original colors to maintain the value of the car as an investment. If the car is missing the pieces to make it numbers-matching then select a color you can live with for a long time. I have grown to like the color combination(s) that use a brown as the primary body color with the majority of the factory combinations for top and interior being pleasing to the eye and are also period correct.
