so i have a 72 GS with a 455. it originally was a 350 and came with a/c. all the hoses are still in place for the vents and the old compressor is in the bracket but clearly does not work. i know i need to replace that, but can anyone else help with what else i need to add/replace? I'm just trying to get moving on this before the summer heat comes in.

also if anyone has an a/c dash pad in good condition let me know :Brow:

Would also recommend replacing the drier/reciever

what exactly isn't working on the compressor?

    clutch not engaging?
    pulley locked up?
    compressor locked up?

I recently replaced the bearing in my clutch and it took about an hour total using the right tools rented from Oreilly's

btw I HIGHLY recommend using envirosafe refrigerant when recharging the system in place of the r12.

    positives

It cools just as effectively as r12 (colder than r134)
is a drop in replacement no need to change hoses oil etc
no need to pull a vacuum so its a complete do it yourself type thing
is DIRT cheap 12 cans (enough to fill my electra nearly 4 times) cost 55 bucks shipped
compressor load is significantly lower than before.

    negatives

people with the sky is falling talk of hydrocarbon refrigerants being a Russian roulette type thing.

I was under the impression that there were no effective drop-in replacements for R12 (freeze12, etc).....What is the actual product called?

I was ready to get an MACS EPA license and start buying up whatever Freon I could find on eBay to fix my 78 Lincoln Continental.

Does your Electra have an A6 compressor? Which tools did you rent? Just the clutch puller? I'm assuming these are fairly universal tools. I was going to buy some but I probably won't be using them much. I need to replace the clutch assembly and want to do it on the car without discharging the system....trans cooler lines might be in the way though. I found a website with a guy doing it on a 12 cylinder Jaguar who was able to life the compressor out a ways without disconnecting the lines.
