Experts of all things rear end related. A local guy wants to trade work for a dead stock 3.31, 72 Chevelle open 12 bolt rear end. It's in working condition and will be removed from a running, driving car. Question is, what would that be worth? I want to be fair with the guy and I know the value on those 12 bolts has gone up.
    Thanks

What I've been seeing is $1800 to $3000. The last time I priced these were $800 to $1500 and that wasn't that long ago. It being an open rear that has not been recently rebuilt makes it the lower of the price range.

Boy I thought these came back down to reality. I would think an open stock 12 bolt would fetch about 500 bucks on a good day.

I thought that too. I was amazed when I saw those prices.

I agree with the other guys. You will have quite a bit in rebuilding it.

Yep, Reason I sell all NEW Moser housing rears now. I will still rebuild your differential. USED stuff has gone through the roof making a muscle car era vehicle out of the reach of most folk. . Everyone thinks they have GOLD.... ONLY you the consumer can control the cost.
No more that 500.00 for that 12 bolt -IF it were a FACTORY posi the number matching housing to someones car would be worth that larger dough.
OPEN diff is a OPEN diff. I have built ONE non posi rear in the 30 years people have bought 12 bolt rears from me. THAT was a nutty numbers guy building it from the build sheet exactly!. AND again I say...As long as your happy I am happy. I am here to help guide you to get what you want to enjoy your Vehicleto the fullest.
THAT is just what he wanted... Even though I told him ...no show is ever going to check the insides of the rear. They will go Engine and trans first before moving to the rear....
AND again I say...As long as your happy I am happy. I am here to help guide you to get what you want to enjoy your Vehicle to the fullest. wether that be a money limit or a performance limit or number matching set-up. I am going to try to make you happy.

Resale is just better with POSI over non posi, same as 12 bolt over 10 bolt and Big block over small block ... It is the consumers WANTS, that is what drives the price and wealth of the car/truck / vehicle.

The value has gone down, not up. With the availability of the Moser 12-bolt,9”,and all of the other manufacturers rearends,it doesn’t make sense to pay very much for an original GM 12-bolt,unless it is a specific code for a concours SS restoration. I pay $500.00 for a 12-bolt Chevy non-posi core. All I use is the housing and caps. Everything else gets pitched. If I would pay any more for it,I will have too much in it,and it would be more practical to spend a little more and get a Moser 12-bolt. Yours has 3:31’s,which is a desirable gear,so that is worth a little more. I would say $700.00 at best,if it’s a nice housing that is not all pitted or has any damage.

Thanks for the input guys, I was thinking around $800. That's probably too high for this one. It's covered in grease and oil but has been under a car for 50 years on Utah roads, so there will be some rust and pitting. I'll tell him $500.
    Thanks

UTAH should not have too much pitting... OIL AND greasy rears are the BEST buy. Keeps them fresh and young looking...lol. Really. Salt can not get through the oil on the tubes.
We use to in the old days spray the under chassis with old motor oil...LOL. EPA was not liking that I am sure...lol

Filled out that Moser form and for a 1968-72 GM A-Body 12 bolt..30 spline bolt in axles.. Eaton 30 spline posi..3.42 Ratio..1310 series yoke..chrome cover..5 X 4 3/4 GM bolt pattern with stock drum brakes and semi gloss black powder coat it came out to $3,430.00+$249.50 for S&H+$254.85 for taxes for a grand total of $3,934.35. Since I have to supply my own fluid lets call it $4000 for what I consider a more or less standard rear end build.

I'm probably stuck in the past but I remember buying 10 bolt A body posis for $250 and 12 bolt A body posis for $300 from the wrecking yards..knock off a $100 from those prices if they were open rear ends.

Have Brian Trick or Monzaz build you an 8.5 10 bolt rear for a lot less than that.

Jim and I also build 12-bolt with the Moser 12-bolt housings. Your number is high, compared to what I am building them for. I know their labor charge is higher. I’m curious to know about all of the other parts selected. I would not choose a 1310 yoke, since you are starting from scratch, and there are better ones available. The BOP cars use a 3R u-joint,which is good, and the 1350 is better yet. The 1310 is the smallest of the u-joints available from that era. They were in standard Chevelles or other Chevys. The SS/big block cars got the 1330,which was a step above the 1310,but the 3R,in my opinion, was even better than the 1330.

My home built 8.5 is just a few tenths away from going 9s in the quarter.

The newer housing 12 bolts do correct many of the factory 12 bolt case weaknesses. I would never spend thst much on 50 year old case case when newer better is an option.

YEP those prices are WAY in the past with the junk yards. Especially since there are none in the junk yards...lol
Call Brian or I (JD Race) for a price on rears.
I sell 12 bolt NEW Moser housing rears with Yukon guts to help the cost some. I have been a Yukon dealer for 20 years now so I get pretty good prices on those parts.
I sell My 12 bolt ALL new rears for 2800.00 ish BASE no brakes.... (remember if your brakes are good on your 10 bolt they can be transferred over to this rear) depending on other upgrades and add ons. NOW I have to put this disclaimer in SINCE i just listed a price...lol. People will see this years down the road and expect it to stay...lol.
ALWAYS check the dates of the threads before expecting that price. :) Jim
