Not necessarily Gary, mecum probably bid it too 40. Until the reserve is met there is no telling who was bidding.

Yeah, I saw that. They ran it through Friday and Saturday. The owner wasn’t happy. He thinks he’s got gold. It’s a clone. I’m sure he has a ton in it. The body was beautiful but again it’s a clone.

I think they both did pretty well considering non-Stage 1 bench seat with the bamboo car , and the black one just a ‘71 Skylark/clone.

I believe that car was restored in Portland, back in 2013 or so by Mr. Montgomery. Rear ended first time out on a Sunday after paint, while headed to a funeral. I sold him a N-25 core bumper, to get it back on the road.
If i remember correctly, it had green seat belts. And it came out of California.
It is a real nice car, looks better in person. I drove it and it is a tight one.

Yep, that’s the one it ran late. I should’ve stayed on the Internet. See if it sold.

The owner tried again at another auction this week (1/14/25), and bidding topped out at $35k this time. Keep in mine it sold for $43k (with fees) in August 2024, then was at the Mecum auction in December 2024 when the new owner tried to flip it but the bidding only went to $41k (may not have even been a real bid). Now at the auction yesterday it was only bid to $35k. The current flipper is spending money each time he tries to sell it at auction (auction listing fee, transportation cost to get the car to the auction, his travel expenses, etc) so the price to break even keeps climbing.

When you see a car crossing the auction blocks time and again, it’s because Mecum owns the car. Private owners aren’t chasing Mecum around the country spending more and more money in travel and listing fees on a car that’s under $200k, too cost prohibitive. It can easily cost $3,000 for shipping and fees each time.

This ‘72 GS455 is not owned by Mecum. One of my very best friends knows Dana Mecum personally so I asked him to go over and ask Dana about the car. This is the response:
