    Hi all,

I got my grill and decklid emblems from www.thepartsplaceinc.com today. The grill emblem looks ok but the studs on the deck lid emblem look awful small and long, and there are three full length studs instead of two. Is this normal with repro emblems ? I'm not trying to build a show car but don't want to drill an extra hole all the way through the deck lid if it's not necessary... Any advice would be appreciated

    Thanks,
    Harry

    EDIT: corrected spelling in title

    Harry,

The trunk emblem should have 3 mounting pins. Below is a picture of an NOS emblem I scored off eBay last year....hope that helps.

Just wondering how TPP emblem looks?? is it soft metal??? Bought one from YO a while back, the pins were in the right place but really long (I cut them to fit and use barrel clips as per orig), the metal was very soft and the emblem quite flexible (unlike GM), also the chrome edges around the letters were rounded off not square like orig. Its on the car but I'm not happy and looking for a replacement.

Want to make some money Brett???LOL

After this debacle, I think I did okay....

Harry, sorry to hijack your thread but the link I provided above has some good info on the quality (of some) repros as well as identifying them...

    Brett,

No problem, and thanks for the link. Tim, the metal is softer than the originals and the pins are way too long also. It will still end up on the car since i've bought it now. Just curious, where did you find the barrel clips ? And while I'm on that subject did the fender emblems both the GS and Stage1 use barrel clips in '72? I know my 68 and 69 used speed nuts.

    Thanks,
    Harry

Harry, I used the clips off my original emblem (which is really decent except for one large pit and if you follow my website you can see I have no trust in local chrome places anymore to fix anything-one day I wll have it repaired). Any body shop supply house will have the clips, even NAPA carries them I think.

The rest of the emblems are held on with speed nuts as you said. Just the trunklid has no access at the back for nuts, so they used the clips there. That is why some cars you see they have moved the emblem inboard for access and used nuts or even fender emblmes whihc don't have the slight curve (not a good idea IMHO the sharks here will catch that pretty fast!! )

You'll have to cut your pins off, and maybe file them down a bit too if they are as sloppy as mine were. Its tedious and annoying, but you only really get one shot. The clips will go over the studs even if too large as they are split, but then might not go into the factory holes.Whatever you do, don't drill out those factory holes....make the emblem fit the trunklid, not vice versa maybe one day you'll find an original or they'll make better repros.

Original trunk emblems should have spring type clips on each peg and you just pop them in. I don't ever remember barrel clips. And you are right all fender emblems have speed nuts. If you paint your car just remember fenders have to come off or loosen to put on emblems. Be carefull as the body shop will just try and barrel clip them when you are not looking. I don't see spring clips on the picture of the NOS so maybe later manufactured ones eliminated this.

Barrel clips are spring clips, same thing different name (ie original to every GS I have ever seen). Slides over emblem prong, then simply clips into place. And that is why the shop does paint only, I assemble and do final alignment and put on emblems trim etc....besides what I can see Darren at Extreme does great stuff, not some cheapo get it out the door kinda operation.

Even prof restored cars I have helped guys re-align panels, I think sometimes they look at something so long they get tunnel vision..often best to walk away for a week or two and come back and look but of course can't do that while on the clock.

The type of clip I was refering to is permanently attached to the prongs. They look like staples that taper out. They are on all three prongs. on the trunk only

You can actually take them off if you try (don't do it unless you have to though as they can be wrecked). We're talking about the same thing. :)

Thats Them, i put some epoxy on the tips of a nice original I have to keep the pins from falling off. Funny the picture of the NOS does not show these.
