If it's a real Stage car someone changed the gears to 2.73's. I emailed him for the VIN and asking if he has any documentation on the GSX option. No response yet. Seems suspect.

Ask him to post a pic of the cowl tag and then look at the paint code number.

If it were a 70, you could do this. From everything I've read here, the 1972 GSX needs documentation from the factory or the Sloan information.

First it must be at least a GS (350, 455, or Stage 1). The X package was an add-on to this and the color of the car didn't matter.

At least the VIN will tell if it's even a GS.

    From Atlantabuick.com:

    4 (Buick)
    G (GS)
    37 (2 door hardtop)
    V (Stage 1); U (455); K (350 GS)
    2 (1972)

One thread mentioned being from Flint assembly for GSX, but I didn't see any confirmations of that. The next letter would be the assembly plant though.

Here's the 1972 VIN decode page from Atlantabuick:

I am suspecting the pnt code indicated on the cowl tag will not match a yellow code number. They will tell you pretty much what you need to know about whether it was sold as an X. It is unlikely that someone would take an 72 X sold as one color and change it to an X using a differrent color.

Good point. It's more likely that, if they were going to restore it as much as they did with this one, that they'd keep the original paint color.

Or they may not know much about it and thought that it should be yellow to be an X?

Hopefully someone will get at least the VIN number.

It could very well be paint code 56 aka Sunburst yellow....That was a correct 72 color or maybe even possibly a SCO color...Look at Phil Roitman's 73 GS,that car is an SCO car and there is no way to document what original color it really is.Even Sloan can't verify it...

    code 56

seller states it is the orignal color sunburst yellow in the ad but doesn't say if its a legit X, only 44 made chances are if it is legit X he would make a real point of making sure we the buyers would know it was, nonethe less I like what I see. Bill

Real hard to tell by the pictures but I don't see the vacuum line which should connect to the tach.

    Brian,
Good eye, there isn't a hose/valve assembly running over to the tach, just the wiring like on the 70 cars.

That's how I knew my 71 GSX was not a hood tach car.

Let me tell you the story. It is a 455 GS Sunburst yellow matching number car. It is not an X. It is documented by Sloans as a GS but it was a rebody car. The cowl tag will match the car. I owned it once and will again if the price is right. John

Well that just about sums it up!

Didnt I read somewhere that 71/72 GSX's have super low body numbers?

So John, this is neither an X nor a Stage car?

This was the first Skylark that I ever owned. Not re-bodied, just a made up car. Great driver. The vin tag is glued to the bottom of the plastic surround with the original vin still attached to the car. It is a very nice "Tribute Car". It does have nice running gear. Sold the car in Moultrie at the swap meet a few years ago.

Hi Duane speeking of your GSX how is it coming along????

    Ryan it's coming along nicely,
The chassis is now complete, minus the shocks, which are being shipped to him tomorrow. (You guys will love the shocks.) And is ready for the body to be dropped on it.

Mark has blasted, done all the sheetmetal work, body work, and has the shell in primer now. The underbelly is all cleaned up and should also be primered by now. This week he expects to paint the semi-gloss black on the floorpan and then apply the overspray of stratomist blue paint.

Mark has some pics on his website, and has more to post.

Mark is correct. Vin is glued to the dash. Reason I sold the car. Not a Stg 1 or X. Still a nice car to drive. I am bidding on it but bothers me that the sale is private. I am about at the end for the car anyway. Still looking for a X clone. John
