neat deal.....but they say the 1972's are the hardest years to verify if its a real gsx or doese anybody have secret way of telling.. o No: o No:
It's all about paperwork. You really need the build sheet and any other papers that might be found in the car or from the original sale of the car at the dealer. I believe early VIN numbers are also a helpful guide as to what MIGHT be a 72 GSX. If the car happened to be a Canadian car there might be a different path as to it's true heritage. Others on the board know more on that subject than I.
This car belongs to a friend of mine. It is hard to document a 72 car. Matt tried Sloan and all he could get for sure is that it is a 72 big block Skylark, which is how the 72's came. He is a sure as he can be that it is a GSX and is a really honest guy. If he had every bit of documentation it would be worth a lot more. If it does not sell will be perfectly happy to keep it. Have not driven the car but could if someone wants me too.
The Sloan documentation shows each sales code, than any option ordered under that particular sales code. 1972 GSXs would be identified by a number/letter under the sales code '4' category. If your friend received the Sloan documentation for this car, and the box under the sales code '4' was blank, this car came with no GSX specific parts from the factory. If I'm confusing you, please send me the information Sloan returned to your buddy and I'll 'decipher' it for you - marco@stage1registry.com
suposedly they only made 42 72 gsx's.for 71 and 72 the gsx was a only a trim package that if ordered could even come on a 6 cylinder car and any piece of the gsx package could be had.
Doug ...I talked to your buddy yesterday evening...very nice fella on the phone and told me all the history that he knew of the car...I asked him if he had any documentation at all ..and he didnt mention anything about sloan .. I could be very interested in the car if it checks out as a gsx... ............. Marco ...would the motor, trans and carb #'s offer any clues....
The GSX 'options' could only be ordered on a GS model, and all those Gran Sports which received GSX 'options' where built in Flint MI only. Since the base GS motor was a 350-4bbl, that is the smallest displacement motor to be surrounded with GSX options.
I will pass this info on to Matt. He is not trying to cheat anyone and it is a nice car. Has a funky interior in my opinion and it is not a trailer queen so it has the normal crap that happens to cars that are driven a bit. I rate it a 2 to 3 car.
Hey Guys, So regardless of wether this is a GSX or not, has anyone actually verified that it is a matching number GS? What is the vin#? Did anyone actually confirm the vin# of the car, and confirm the serial # on the block and confirm the serial # on the trans and confirm the axel tag? George
well....we got the vin and tag # the car turns out to be a regular skylark that came with a 350 built in Fremont... just a nice clone http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=109518 a few pics of car.....
