    Bryon,
Amazing how much s--t hold those things in.
Did you remove the dash pad first?
Kinda gives you a better view of the whole picture.
I would also suggest investing in the service manual for your '72.
Service manual and chassis manual are available together on one CD now.
    Look on Ebay.

    Dash Removal

Have you released the speedometer cable from the dash? The cable is held to gauge cluster by a spring loaded medal tab. Push on the metal tab and the cable can be pulled out of the cluster. Should allow you to remove the gauge cluster.

    DASH CLUSTER REMOVAL

    1) remove the dash pad (Two nuts on the back side of the pad on top of the radio and I think four screws at the top of the bezel itself.)

    2) remove the under steering colum cover (four screws)

    3) remove six screws from the bezel that hold it to the dash (two philps head next to the steering colum and four 1/4" bolt heads along the top of the bezel.)

    4) remove the two 9/16' nuts that hold the steering colum to the dash and lower to help on getting to step five huts.

    5) with a little flexabilty take the two nuts that hole the air/heater control panel onto the bezel.

    6) reach behind the bezel either to top or from below and release the speeometer cable bt pushing on the tab and pulling the cable.

    7) Then unplug the windshield wiper switch, headlight switch, and plug on the back of the gage package/ light cluster.

Number five step is the hardest, but if you pull the bezel out a little you will be able to see the nuts better.

To get to the nuts on the dash pad you might have to remove the radio.

    Good step by step Mike!
My step 1 is usually - try to remove glovebox liner without totally trashing. (Usually I Lose)

I just removed my dash and completed this process of changing the spedo. cable. I can tell you from experience (just two weeks ago) that you do not need to remove the radio for this project. You do need to remove the glove box. You can accomplish this task with a little patience and you won't screw any thing up. I've taken my glove box out at least 7 times and I've only torn one corner on it just this last time because I broke it when it was out the last time.
The step by step process above is pretty good but He did forget to meniton one very important step. Once you have lowered the steering colum you must remove the two hex nuts that hold the two wire harness hooks in place. There is one hook on each side of the steering column. They are hard to see and they wrap around the larg wiring harness. You can't pull the bezel out more than maybe 3 in. until you remove the hex nuts.
By the way the clamp that holds the speedo cable on is released by pressing on a small tab just under where the cable connects to the speedometer. You can use your finger or a small screwdriver to push down the tab.
    Good luck
