As part of the mechanical upgrades to my ‘69 I ‘m in the process of having the rear end rebuilt. I pulled it from a ‘72 Skylark four door and had a clutch pac Posi and 3.23 gears put in it about 20 years ago. I drove it hard those 20 years on the street and it has way north of 100 1/4 mile passes on it as well. I dropped it out and brought It to a respected local shop to have them go through it and change the gear ratio to 3.90s. Got the estimate back and all bearings including the pinion are bad and they’re telling me the clutch pac posi is to worn out to rebuild. They’re recommending installing a new Auburn Posi unit, gears, and replace all bearings for $1600. They said they have to try to source the axle bearings because they’re pressed on bearings, they thought those were only on the 8.2s. My question is are there specific bearings I should be telling them to get, and is the Auburn a good choice?
Set 9 bearings. No big deal. Jeep uses them too I think.....just m a ke sure to get the correct thickness seal Position unit 400ish Gears. 200ish Bearing set and Install kit. 200ish 800 to set it up????? Seems pricey
From what I understand is that the auburn posi is not rebuildable (correct me if I am wrong). I had an Eaton posi installed in my '72 GS as it was originally a peg leg.
I think your getting bamboozled. I would also stay away from the auburn unit. It's a cone type. The Eaton is a better buy.
I’ll ask about the Eaton posi rather than the Auburn. We pay a little more for good labor up here, no big city prices. Would you figure 6 hours total labor for a complete tear down, cleaning, installing all bearings and setting up new gears?
I have a 12 bolt coming in on monday. For a gear swap and new bearing....i can't seem to get any more than 350 or pplwalk away
Man, you can about buy a rebuilt rear for that. Is Moser or Currie rebuilding it to drag specs? Ask Jim Weise if he can or if he knows a good local one since you are in MN. Worth a few hours drive at least. I agree with other folks, you need a new shop. It sounds like they quoted a "don't want to do it" price. That posi should be rebuildable unless you totally grenaded it. I wouldn't do a cone-style though in any case. My current favorite is a True-Trac without cones, clutches or special lubes though I'm not sure how it will perform in a hard race condition. It does very well on the street without being notchy and noisy.
My complete rebuilt 8.5’s are $1500.00 plus freight. ALL new parts. They would be more if you wanted aftermarket shafts and a girdle cover. Nothing rare or hard to find on these rears. I would rebuild that posi unit. The Auburn is a step backwards. All of the bearings are readily available. The axle bearings are SET9 and the axle seals are 712146. At this point,I would question if they know what they are doing.
So you should be clear Brian that you are including a Housing...Correct? If not your both in the same price range.
My 8.5” would be built from scratch, with all new parts. The housings would get blasted and powder coated. New Tru Trac posi unit. New Motive Performance gears,Timken bearings/seals. All assembled, ready to run. Price is $1500.00 plus freight. This is with the stock axles and stock cover. It sounds like that shop is replacing the posi unit and the bearings for $1600.00. Re-using his existing housing and gears.
Brian, the shop was purchasing new posi unit, new gears, all bearings and seals and installing it all in my supplied rear end for the $1600 price quote. They were also reusing the stock axles. They were proposing an Auburn posi though and several have said that I should go with the Eaton or Yukon posi as they are clutch style and rebuildable.
wipe the pinion teeth and take another picture. feel the gear face. toe to heel ...any indent and the gears are compromise and will likely make noise. First look they look to be ok. Might need a readjustment...I do not know what they were set to. Also feel the top edge of the coast and drive side of the pinion. If it feel sharp or serrated you might be having trouble setting them up quiet. Might only be good for a beater around town and or demo derby off road etc. They will work....just may not be as quiet as you want for a showy muscle car.
Nekkidhillbilly , I'm finally catching up on cleaning the garage and took a few more pictures of the 3.23. gear set. I'd send them your way for $50 plus shipping, coming from the 55803 zip code.
