I know that GM changed to the 8.5 rear end in the early 70's. Did the 71 or 72 Skylark come with one? Did it come with both c-clip and Ford type axle keepers?

71-2 Skylark and Cutlass have the 8.5".
Rear u-joint is held in place w/straps and screws.

    8.2" units use u-bolts w/nuts.

Bolt in axles on Buicks, Chevy had the C-clips. I believe there were some Canadian Skylarks with 12 bolts, that I heard were Chevy rears, but that needs to be confirmed or set straight.

Are these press on bearing 8.5 rear ends the same as the c-clip type? From what I have read these 8.5 rear ends are strong, and there are plenty of aftermarket gears and stuff for them.

Sounds like you have an 8.2 in your 70 Skylark.
