My grandmother is in the hospital and probably will not be driving for at least a month, so I have her car for the mean time. I've mentioned it before, including tranny issues, the last one when it fried due to lack of fluid changes. So, I think she either had it rebuilt or had a rebuilt one put in. Well, I've been driving it for a few days now and I found that it has a really bad shutter in D (3rd). Between 25/30-to 40/45 mph at about 1800-3000 rpms, it just shutters. You can feel it vibrating the whole car. It doens't do it in low gears or when it is in overdrive. What the heck is wrong now?

It also seems to still be doing something that I think it has done in the past, which is not wanting to go into overdrive nicely all the time. I can be cruising, maybe just giving light gas and watching the tach, sometimes it seems like it revs up high, then drops down into overdrive. I don't know if this is related at all to the above or a completely different situation.

Sounds like it could be the timing sensor magnet . It came off my Park Ave. and it shook and idled like yours .

    good luck :)

Wouldn't that affect all the gears, though? There is no shuddering at all if I keep it in 2nd and if I'm in OD, as the shuddering stops after the OD downshift. It is only in 3rd, starting at around 1800 rpms while doing maybe 25/30 mph that it shutters like crazy.

Okay, so I noticed another noise accompanying the shuddering. Not sure if it was always there or if I just never heard it because I had the radio on. As its shuddering, there is a high pitch electric whirring noise, sort of like a window washer motor or something. Doesn't seem like this is a good thing.
