so the 66 gs that im doing for my mom has every part of the ac still there. the lines all look pretty good just need to be cleaned up. how do you figure out what parts are good, and what parts are bad. i know i have to have the compressor rebuilt because its frozen. but what about the condensor and all of the dryers and such. just put it together and try and charge it? and how has anyone made there old lines look nice and new again. is there a way to tape off the hose and clean the metal lines or paint them somehow?

If the system is still intact, do a vacuum test to check for leaks. You'd hate to get deep into it and then have to buy a condenser or evaporator AFTER you did all the work and charged the system.

You can clean the crud off the outsides of the hoses with just about any cleaner that dissolves oil and grease . Be sure to cover the ends of the hoses, you don't want anything inside them. You will need to replace the receiver-dryer with one that can be used with TC134A refrigerant, at a minimum. There are flushing chemicals on the market, and you should flush the entire system. Once that's done, You can get a kit for replacing all the o-ring seals. Have TC134A oil put in the compressor. The last time I priced R-12 it was $40 a pound and you'll need almost 4, iirc. TC134A is much cheaper. It will not cool as well, but these old cars cold freeze meat back in the day, so slightly lower cooling performance won't be too much trouble.
