I'm trying to match up the serial # on the block of my 69 GS400 to the vin & i am having trouble. Where the service manual says it should be, i can't seem to see it. I have located the production code & it verifies that the engine is a "400" for a 69 GS. I'm looking @ the left side of the motor, between spark plugs 1 & 3. No stamping. The motor is still in the car, so i haven't removed anything to see if it just hiding real good. Is there any other way to verify this engine is the original? Hopefully someone can help me.

    Thanks.:)

  2. Rick, it can be very difficult to see the stampings if the engine isn't cleaned up good. If you can, try wire brushing the area in between the 1&3 spark splugs, where the serial # should be. Or if the block has been resurfaced, the code could be gone?

    David,
Hard to tell if block has been resurfaced. If it has, you would think the production code would be gone also. Correct RR code. I've cleaned it up pretty well, to the point of clean red paint & even some of the paint is scraping off. No other way to verify this is original motor, is there?

    Thanks.

  4. The serial # is the only way to match it up as original, as it would match the last digits of the dash VIN. Factory workers have done oddball stuff, have you checked the front of the left side of the block too, just in case? That's where the serial # is on many other engines/years. You just never know.

David, no i haven't. I'm not gonna worry about it too much until i have the motor out & cleaned up real good. I have all other documentation & am hoping i find this to round it all out. By the way, seen you talking with someone interested in your steering column. Sell her? You know why i'm asking. Still need the console!:Brow:

  6. Rick, no, the steering column is not sold yet. Someone is interested in it, and if he takes it, I would be ready to start letting other items go too. I'm sure the column will be the hardest to sell, due to what I paid for it in the first place. I haven't forgotten about ya!
