Accelerating Pump Linkage

I went out to my car yesterday morning to get the numbers off the carb when I happened to notice the accelerating pump linkage. I've looked at it many times before, but never noticed this before. The arm for the pump has 2 holes. All the ones I've seen pictures of, the linkage is hooked up to the inside hole. Mine was hooked up to the outside hole. So I played around with the linkage in both holes to see what the difference was. In the inside hole the linkage has more "throw", which would dump more gas into the motor. This has been the problem with the car, not getting enough gas when I step on it hard. So after finding this out, I fired up the car to test it out. I took it out for a few errands around town. I didn't push it too hard until I was coming home, to let it warm up very good. It still has a bit of a bog from a dead stop, but way better than it was( it was fish tailing so bad I had to let off for fear or looseing it). It still needs a rebuild job, but that's a winter project. Just wanted to post what I had found.

    Dan,
What kind of carb are you working on?

I was recently working on Steve Everists, Holley 850, and by changing the accelerator pump cams, it changed the way the car reacted, big time. No more pops and hickups.

There is a lot of fine tuning that you can do on the carbs, weather it is a Quadrajet, Holley, or others to make for better gas mileage, or better performance.

Dan, without me knowing all of the facts, make sure your pump plunger is good. Also, the secondary air valve diaphragm may be causing your bog.....that's that thing on the right side of the carb that looks like a choke pull off........it should hold vacuum and be sure it's adjusted correctly. Retarded ignition timing will also cause stumbling problems.......stuck advance weights, leaky vacuum advance, etc. As for the holes, most I've seen use the inner hole but some use the outer hole, I don't know why but follow the specs for your carb. :bglasses:

The carb is a quadrajet. I have been working on it for a few months, trying different things out. This 1 made the most improvement out of all of them. I have made many adjustments to both the carb and the timing. All would be an improvement, but like I said earlier this was the biggest gain. I just got back from driving it again. Still has a little bog, but no where as much as before. It still has the bushing worn on the main shaft. I know that gives it a little vacuum leak there. I really wanted to wait until this winter to rebuild it, that's why I haven't done the rebuild job yet. I'm happy with it for now. I'll probably leave it alone for now, as it's not going to be much longer before it's in storage for the winter. The weather forcast is calling for snow showers all weekend and into monday :( Then I'll start the winter projects on the car( there are many of them) Thanks
