Air Ride vs Coil Springs

    Howdy,

Just to I can get this started on the right foot, I don't have an A-body so the global west stuff I would want for it is out so I'm a bit out of luck there. I'm looking at turning my future 65 Riviera into a pro-touring type vehicle, which means its got to be able to hold the road through the twisties, not just get up and go and then stop again. Air Ride makes complete systems that would allow all the cool features like a lowered stance but the ability to make it over speedbumps and such, but how will it hold the road and how will the ride comfort be compared to some nice shocks and coils and boxing the rear arms?

    Thanks,

A friend of mine has air ride on his s10, and he only has a 2 valve system, which allows air to transfer side to side during cornering. For PT you would need a 4 valve system. I used a lot of circle track and cup components for my 72 project. If your ever in the Lima area let me know I will show you my chassis, it may give you a few ideas. There are many cheaper ways to do the pro touring thing rather than using GW or Hotchkis

the cool thing about the Riv rear suspension is its a 3 link like a NASCAR truck arm setup, just with shorter arms. While the X-frame won't let me make the arms much longer I have thought about messing with the rear geometry to allow me to get my 3" pipe over the axle on the pass side and maybe cheat a bit more tire clearance. I'd also want to upgrade the panhard rod too I would think. I also plan on adding something akin to subframe connectors to get a full perimeter frame and allow me to get the custom seat and seatbelt braces mounted solidly under the car. The front suspension is what I'm a bit more concerned with, I can get sway bars for the machine from Addco so that should help but I'm thinking a 4 bag, 4 valve system might be a good complement and allow me to make some fairground lowering fun though a speed sensative ride height algorythm would also rock, something like the Lincoln MkVIII has. If I'm ever heading up to Lima, you can bet I'll be game for stopping by and seeing your setup.
