What does the air sensor than sticks into the air cleaner actually do? I know that in moderen cars it feedbacks to the computer to adjust air/fuel ratio. But since my 1968 wildcat does not have a computer, what purpose does it serve? Can it be removed? Thanks, Dino
Has two vacuum hoses on it--one from the carb and one to the vacuum motor that works the air door in the snorkel? It maintains a more-even temperature of air entering the carb by balancing heat-stove air with underhood air (or outside air, depending on model and year) It's main benefit is to eliminate the "40 degrees and raining" carb icing problems; although it would assist any cold-weather operation.
The air sensor in the air cleaner is actually a temperature sensor. It modulates vacuum to the temperature door in the air cleaner snorkel. It keeps the door in a position so that air in the air cleaner is maintained at a temp of 110* It has nothing to do with feedback carbs or air fuel ratio, that would be an oxygen sensor and they are located in an exhaust manifold.
I want to put a chrome open air cleaner. Since I don't drive this car in the winter would it be okay to remove it when I remove the stock air cleaner? Thanks, Dino.
